I am looking for a MOD that allows users to select the name of another member from a scroll-down-list when posting and notifies the member that a post has been addressed to him/her with an email message.
Does such a MOD exist, please?

Regards

Well, I have thought that many of my ideas were terrific until I heard opinions from the people here that have been doing this for a LOT longer than I have.

I chose to be appreciative of their suggestions though.

Did ya ever think maybe there's a reason there isn't a mod like you want?

It really does sound like a good idea at first. But after thinking about it, I agree it's an awful idea. It's all we can do to prevent users from talking about/to each other!

Not that I (and others) haven't emailed people to let them know about things. But it's not something I'd want to try to automate.<

Well - thanks for all your replies and suggestions.

However, I did not ask if anyone thinks this is a good idea or not.
I asked if anyone knows of a MOD like I have described.

Looks like there is currently no such MOD that people here know about. Fair enough. I'll check back periodically, maybe someone that understands what I'm talking about might happen by and post something positive.

I agree with HuwR. Plus as mentioned before you would be sending unsolicited email which is spam. If they just subscribe to topic then it's not unsolicited.

Of course, you can do what you want, but I would never do this on my forum and risk getting put on blacklists.

if you want to address a post to a particular member then you should use either the forums email functions or the PM mod, forums are for open discussions and are not therefore aimed at one particular member, if members can't be bothered to return to the forum to check messages then they should not be using them to ask questions.<

Hello SiSL,

Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

I'd like the forum to automatically inform a user by email when a post is addressed to him/her.
This does, of course, require a method to choose/select a particular username when posting. Like a dropdown list of all users that have access to that forum which is part of the posting window, just like the dropdown lists for choosing a font, size or colour.

Thinking ahead, one problem I see this mod creating is that people will be conducting their own conversations within topics which could lead to quite confusing linear reading. I think the PM mod would be perfectly suited to your needs.

It sounds more like subscriptions, but unless the user is subscribed to the topic in question I don't think there's much you can do about it as sending emails to those who have requested not to have them would be considered as spam<

Sounds like the PM mod ;)

Well no - not really. Though, thanks for the suggestion, I had not considered a private message system, I'll check it out.

What I'm really looking for is something that is part of the normal posting process.
At the simplest level, I want something like this:

When a user clicks the "reply with quote" icon when replying to a post, I want the forum to generate an email and send it to the author of the original post, telling him/her that someone has replied to the original post.

Ideally, I want users to choose the name of another forum member from a dropdown list from within the posting window,so a post can be addressed to a particular user. Just like the way a user can choose the font, size or color of the message text. And, of course, I want the forum to generate an email to inform the addressee that someone has posted to him/her.
