Posted - 19 May 2006 : 15:15:15 I know how the out-of-the-box password reset works and even like it. However, I was wondering if there is a way or a MOD that changes the way the password reset works. I need to be able to allow users to reset or get their password without having it sent to the e-mail address that they input when registering. We want to use a snitz forum for emergencies such as hurricanes etc. so that we can post information back and forth between each other when our e-mail server goes down. Seeing as how our users can't remember their passwords on a day to day basis I know that we are going to have problems when something like a hurricane rolls through and they have never even used the forum until the e-mail server gets blown away. We want to require users to input something like their birthdate (which is an option in the admin area) and then on the forgot password page ask them their username and birthdate and then expose their password on the webpage without sending an e-mail to the default address that is not even going to work. Any suggestions?< |

Posted - 23 May 2006 : 09:29:29 The problem with the e-mail address requirement is that 99% of our users are going to input their work e-mail address and when a hurricane destroys our building we won't have work e-mail addresses up and running. I am trying to figure out a way that users can enter in some personal info to get at their password without having to have it sent to them via e-mail. If someone figures out a users birthdate, e-mail address, and username and they reset a password it won't be the end of the world to us. we just need a non-email way of getting these reset or changed.< |

Posted - 22 May 2006 : 07:04:44 Mike, the e-mail address requirement is there as a way for members to identify themselves when resetting there password; if you did away with it, anybody would be able to change anybody else's password whenever they wanted. Why not try installing one of the anonymous posting mods and set it up so only your emergency forum(s) allow topics to be posted anonymously.

If this is the case, then you might want to get that information, and then send a card to them with their login information. This could be coupled with other information like what to do in an emergency, where to go, who to call, and the like.
