To me, this is a very confusing and inconsistent navigation idiom. Why not just stick with the folder idiom the whole time?

Posted - 14 December 2005 : 14:59:36 Frankly speaking, I've been using this forum for about 5 1/2 years and I hardly use the folders. My main point of entry is active.asp and then I just click on the jump to last post link for each topic I want to visit. The Jump To drop down is used sometimes too.
Anyway, I second Shaggy, having the folder show in default.asp would be pointless since it would have a single level, to allow you to reach the very page where you were located!< |

Posted - 14 December 2005 : 14:14:51 If you are on default.asp, you are at the top level of your forums. Therefore, a folder tree would consist of a single item, linking you to default.asp - pretty pointless. If it bothers you that much, you can turn off category groups in your admin options to remove the select combo or you can edit default.asp to remove it and leave the Group Categories Menu link.

The folder navigation mechanism persists as long as you stay inside a "forum group", e.g. below the 'Snitz Forums 2000 DEV-Group' level. At or above that the folders are replaced with the dropdown/select list. The point is: Why change it at all? The folder idiom works and it can work at all levels. If you want to use the dropdown/select list put it on the right side of the page as it appears elsewhere.

Anyway, as starting info, you should take notice that what it seems to me is that the "folder idiom" just shows your current location, that's the main purpose. The fact that you can navigate using it should be seen as a side benefit and not taken as an indication that it means the folder's are the main navigation mechanism.
What it is is confusing. Regardless of the intent, or your thought that is "should be seen as a side benefit", the folder list on the top left of the page becomes one of the primary navigation mechanisms once you've entered a forum and is the more prominent navigation mechanism since it's at the top of the page. Why not use it at every level?

Posted - 14 December 2005 : 12:32:28 That's my understanding of it as well; the tree structure is just so's you can see wher you currently are within the forums with the fact that you can jump up one or more levels by clicking on the relevant link is just a handy extra whereas the select combo box on default.asp is a navigational tool to allow you to jump between the various categories you have access to; it's a similar element to the "Jump To" select combo at the bottom of this page.
