I'm a forum user, not a forum owner or admin or moderator. I have no idea what the moderator interface is or looks like, or what would be required by the admin to make this work. Could something like the following be added (if similar functionality isn't already present)? The forum I frequent uses 3.4.05
Check-box and 1-click to moderate/delete a post, an entire thread, or x specific posts within a thread.
Then email the content of the individual posts back to the post's creator (via their email in user preferences), along with a moderation message saying the post (or thread) has been deleted for such and such a reason (if a reason is given by the moderator in a textbox or generically filled in by the forum). If the user doesn't have an email in preferences, no email would be sent.
Given the difficulties and apparently time consuming nature of moderation, it would be nice if this feature would actually speed the process of moderation up, or at least be transparent and automated enough to not interfere.
This request is based on the following back and forth (my post didn't actually contravene any guidelines that I could figure out, someone just thought it or the potential replies, if any, inappropriate):

Me:Understood. In the future could you email the contents of the removed
topic back to me (and presumably other authors of removed topics and
responses). I did not have a backup copy of what I posted.
<sic my civilized frustration>
We have considered your request and whilst we understand how
frustrating it might be to lose your original thoughts, we feel that this is not
a viable procedure for us to adopt.
<sic>
There are occasions when a thread has become unsustainable to allow
under the guidlines, and it might be that one of your non-guidline
violation posts could get caught up in such a deletion.

It is not viable because the Discussion Board is not automated to
function in this way and we don't have time to handle messages individually
for people. Moderation is a very time consuming role for just a handful
of volunteers.
We feel that it is not our responsibility to preserve member's posts,
especially where they contravene the guidelines. Our responsibility to
the <sic> as moderators is to ensure the integrity and compliance to the
<sic> Guidelines.<
