I am designing a site that will receive 800k hits in one hour for one day about once per month. I can't guarantee which page will be hit.
I have a dedicated server (Celeron processor, 1GB memory, MSServer 2008) that also hosts the DNS. My ISP is a very good one so I don't have any problems with connectivity. But even if I create static HTML pages, I'm afraid *that* many visits will take down the DNS.
Besides spending thousands of dollars to buy multiple servers, what options are available to keep the site alive when this happens? I've never had to deal with this so I'm a newbie.

Mmmm, 800000 per hour is less than 250 per second if spread evenly over time. That might pose some issues with respect to networking. I think that looking into a hardware load balancer / caching system might be an option. Perhaps your ISP has the option to provide them. Examples:

800,000 page views per hour, or 800,000 hits per hour?
Best you can do is making a static HTML page if you have bandwidth...

It will be a page that is linked to as a headline from a popular site and brings about 800k hits on that page per hour as long as the link is live (usually one day). In my experience, most people will not view other pages after they visit the site.
My host mentioned something about caching the pages on one of their shared servers. They felt confident about that many hits at once. Does anyone know what this means or how they accomplish it?
