Tomorrow I fly off to beautiful Steamboat Colorado for a week in a condo and some high-velocity fun involving pine boards and a mountain.
Its been a while since my last vacation, and this last week has had some loooong hours at the office.
There's high-speed at the condo, so I may occasionally pop in at the end of the day - possibly even with some pictures.

I'll try to post up some photos tomorrow. I just got settled into "the Lodge". All of our tickets, etc. are all set, we've unpacked, and I'm testing the free wifi.

Time for some good news/bad news...
Good News:
I have a couple of good pictures of the mountain. I'll post them either later tonight or tomorrow.
Bad News:
This is the first day of a week on the slopes and I just tore my ACL.
The condo we're at has us on the 3rd floor and there is no elevator.
Good News:
There's a good 'net connection, and I now have time to work on some personal projects that have been long neglected. And there is an excellent view out the condo's kitchen window.

I remember the first time I went skiing. I was about 17 and had just rotated to Germany from SE Asia. I went with the unit to Salzburg.
Day 1
I ended up sitting in the snow trying to get my skis on. Finally managed that, stood and promptly started to slide backwards (on an almost perfectly flat surface). Couldn't walk, couldn't stop without sitting back down.
A little girl (9 y/o) took pity on me and started teaching me how to walk, turn, use a t-bar, etc. By the end of the day, I could miss all of the other new skiers as they fell all over the beginner slope.
Day 2
Being an "experienced" skier now, I decided to try the intermediate slope (quite steep, ended at the ski lodge). At the bottom of the slope on the right was the beginners' slope, on the left was the chair lift (wall of trees on both sides). At the bottom was an eight-foot wall of snow that seperated the slopes from the parking lot. It had a gap cut into it that the buses would stop at to load/unload passengers.
I started down the slope, wanted more speed and crouched. Got moving very fast. Didn't know how to stop yet
, so my plan was to turn uphill onto the beginners' slope (which was empty when I took the lift up). About a minute before I reached the bottom, the beginners' slope filled with a new group. Strike that plan.
Next option? Turn far left and try to go up the treeline. Nope. Bunch of new people putting on skis in front of the lodge. Final choice was to run straight into the wall of snow to stop.
A busload of Japanese tourists emptied into the slope and promptly began photographing everything in sight. I aimed directly in front of the bus and ran straight into the wall of snow. Did I stop?
Nope. But you knew that. I went up and over the wall, across the hood of the bus, across the back of someone's truck passing by, and landed in the ice-covered parking lot - where I promptly slid all the way to the far end before finally stopping in the snow piled from the snow blowers.
I trudge back to the slope, CARRYING my skis. The bus backed up to let me in. Everyone was cheering and laughing. One Japanese man came to me and said "My camera was not ready. Please to do it again."
Instead, I found the bar in the lodge and drank for about 10 hours.<

Other than that, there isn't that much I can do aside from shop the over-priced stores at the bottom of the mountain. I can't drive as it is my right ACL, and I can't quite get the gas pedal with the brace on. =/
Carefree, thanks for that story. It definitely made my day.
