Lol well just funny to hear even though it may be a pagan holliday still the meaning to lots is christ's birthday (Even though I know he was not born on christmas)

Sorry for the wrong spelling that could be a meme wink<

it is in actual fact the celebration of the midwinter solstice which occurs around the 22nd of December, nobody actually knows when christ was born, once again it is an example of the early christians co-opting the pagan festivals as their own. It is also interesting to note that nearly all old churches in the UK have a Yew tree (pagan place of worship) in there grounds and which generally predates the church by a thousand years or so smile<

Evidence would suggest that he was born (if he even existed, of course) in late spring or early summer. There was a census on at the time and people would have had to travel great distances to their home towns to be counted so, more than likely, they would have arranged the timing so that people could travel in the spring before it got too hot in the summer or started to get cold in the autumn/winter.
How did we get on to this from discussing Huw's Portal?!

Blame me shaggy. I like to open cans of worms so to speak. Like I said I know he was not born in december and I know winter soltace is where it comes from. But still the meaning whereever it has come from was adopted and is now generally accepted as Christ B-day.
not saying you believe in him or debating the fact he existed more just that this is the general feeling of christmas at least as I know it here in the US.

But on a side note I do believe religion has been around since the beggining of existance. But this is just opinion not factual things to back this up just a feeling. So I think any of pagan or non pagan celebrations or practices have actually come about by different beliefs so to speak so personally I don't think either one predates each other I think they came around at the same time. But churches and religions that come up over time definanlty adopt practices and beliefs from those who have gone on before them.

Oh, religion has definitely been around for as long as we've been able to worship people or things; paganism itself can be considered a religion. And, yes, the word Christmas is a contraction of "Christ's Mass" (derived from the Middle English "Christemasse" and Old English "Cristes Mæsse". Incidentally, the word xmas, which so many of my christian friends berate me for using because it replaces "Christ" with, what some see as a generic "x", actually comes from the Greek word for "Christ" which begins with X.
