Are you guys getting the Microsoft alert on your task bar saying you can get Windows 10 FREE?
http://www.computerworld.com/article/2906810/microsoft-seeds-windows-7-81-pcs-with-windows-10-upgrade-nag-notices.html
My question is this, after the first year do you then have to purchase it?
I've heard it's FREE for the life of your computer as long as you get it during the first year.
I've also heard it's only FREE for this first year after it's released.
Does anyone have a link explaining this?
Also, are you guys going to wait about doing the upgrade to avoid the hassle of the probable bugs that are always in new versions?
Inquiring minds want to know. . .

If you are entitled to the free upgrade and get it during the time window, it's free for life and will update, etc. I've been involved in the technical preview for the life of the project. The "nag" alerts are created by Microsoft so that people will "reserve" their copy in advance. There's LOGIC (for a change) behind this move. Microsoft knows the demand will be large and they're wanting to limit how many downloads are concurrently hitting their servers on the week of Jul 29. They plan to make it available through cloud user sharing sometime in late Aug or early Sep - so online users will actually be providing legal copies, much like a worldwide "pirate" network. |

What's your assessment, Carefree? I received my "nag notice" 2 days ago and have opted in. How do you like it? |

According to Microsoft at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq
1. It is a free full upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade is not a 12 month version, but a full forever version 2. You have 12 months from the 29th July 2015 to take advantage of the free upgrade
I would check out the Microsoft FAQ's. The only disappointment is that there is no Media Center in it.

As far as I know, MS has discontinued media center entirely.

I enjoy it a lot more now than the earlier versions. Some of the functionality that now exists was sorely missed early on. Still don't have everything which will be available next month. It's what Windows 8 should have been. |

Does anyone have more to share about Windows 10?
I haven't done the upgrade yet.

I have it... And like it! it took a bit of configuring to the way I want it, including such things as getting start menu x so I can have it without all the tiles of uninteresting (to me) things. I like it too: http://www.startmenux.com/index.html I also have some "gadgets" I like from 7 that are tested and fine... and avoid the app store scam as much as possible. This program will port into 10 if you have gadgets you want, too: http://8gadgetpack.net/
once I had that set it's ALL good and I'm set for what I've heard is 10 years but that might be life too... lol who knows?
Hope this helps. I would not hesitate to grab it and would do it again if I had to. |

I have it on a couple of my machines, the one I used during the insider preview testing was upgraded a few days ago. That particular laptop I will probably revert to Win 7 because it has some hardware coded just for that OS. When I run any other OS on it, the fan never seems to shut off.
The second machine is going to be left behind for my son's visitors to use, so it's up to him what OS to leave on it. I think it's fine with Win 10.
Win 10 (provided you get it within the 12 month grace period) will be free for the life of the computer (most don't last 10 years anyway). It is not coded/registered to an individual but to the computer. |

So how's Edge? I have 3 machines with upgrades available to install but haven't yet, I've been doing some other stuff for the next few days anyway, but I'm curious about the new browser. And does Edge force itself as your default browser without giving you a choice?

Edge? Can take it or leave it. It doesn't force itself to be your browser. Who started that rumor? I'm using Firefox on W10 at the moment. |
