I haven't really been around and as active as I'd like to have the last couple of months due to a hellish work schedule and some other issues. But, yesterday I saw something that just tickles me every time I think about it.

For reference, one of the guys in our department handles registration for our CPR classes here at the hospital. These are our classes for our employees.

Each department has a point of contact who signs them up, etc. They fill out a spreadsheet with the pertinent information and which class they want to register them for, and they're supposed to e-mail this to the aforementioned gentleman in our department. This is in response to an e-mail that he sends to them. (so all involved have e-mail access)

Yesterday, one of the points of contact sent him .... a fax of a printout of the spreadsheet.

You can't make this up.<

Why are you surprised? I know of a colleague that went to work to a big company, who obviously had a very good local network. At a given place in the enterprise a large amount of data was generated and kept in a excel sheet. To send them to the main office, they printed huge numbers of pages and ... faxed them. So, your episode is not that surprising .<

Yeah, I would say so. Some people can't just leave the old ways, can they?<

Guys...this is common practice here in the Netherlands...at least for domain registrations.
Yesterday I decided to register fomago.nl and fomago.com (in addition to phomago.com which I already have).
Registering a .nl domain works like this:
- you fill out your information on the website.
- the registrar sends you a SIDN ('the dutch ICANN') form via PDF via e-mail
- you print the PDF, sign it, and make a photocopy of your ID card
- you fax the printed PDF and the photocopy of the ID card to the registrar...

In my case that last step is actually sending an e-mail to our mail-to-fax system with two PDF's attached, which then makes a fax of it.
The whole process takes at least 3 days to complete...totally insane.

Fortunately this is not the case when I register a .com, .net etc. Just go to GoDaddy.com, and within minutes I'm done.<
