How anyone created add-ins for the forum? I'm going to be integrating the forum with my website and hope to create a "poor man's" portal. Specifically, I'm wanting to post the lastest postings from any particular Category or further qualify it to the Topic level.< |

In addition to the ones up on www.snitzbitz.com you can find a bunch of other MODs posted around the forums here.< |

I should also add that there are a couple of "ready made" portals already done. Image has one, and the other is ServerHackers - can't seem to find the links at the moment...
They are essentially Snitz + a bunch of MODs. They may or may not be what you need. (I'm more of a DIY kind of guy myself, but the SHN forums wasn't bad last I looked as long as you had a decent server and something better than Access for the DB)< |

Great! I'm a DIY type too. I realized 'MOD' was how folks around here referred to add-ins. I spent a couple of years participating in the development of ASP-Nuke.com's offering, even creating a 'pro' version that could run many websites from the same server folder. At one point I had a test of ten unique sites running on the same engine. All kinds of potential with this forum.
When you find the links, run them by me. :)< |

The forum you are referring too is found at http://www.shnforums.com/forum/sitenews.asp. Apparently it is the 're-launch' of the original site, but under new management. Sounds like a restaurant doesn't it. This is a really good effort on their part to present a usable forum/portal site. Since I'm so earlyin the process of developing my other sites, this could be a real boost.< |

That is indeed the one I was thinking of. I last played with the beta version of what they're running now.
Is there anything in particular that you're looking for?< |

I want to display some lists on my leading page like a Top 5 or Top 10 of recent news items, forum posts, most popular posts, list of recent members, etc. I may even try my hand at reskinning the portal part of the application. For some sites I've used Webstyles 4 by Xara. It's a bit quirky but does have the advantage of being highly customizable. Using the css from WS4, and the queries from the forum I can roll out a very well heeled portal site. I've even used an Addin mail system call MYL (Mail You Like) to add fully email functionality to some of my sites in the past.< |

AnonJr, I saw this thread and had to ask you a question pertaining to a piece you wrote in the quote above. I have put up my site using SHN. My server is decent and I use Access for the DB. Are there problems with using Access that you know of that I don't? Just curious.
Thanks for letting me jump in. < |
Have a great day! Terry |

Mostly just performance issues, and largely dependant on the volume of traffic you get. The same could really be said of any site using an Access database, its just that some of the features built into the SHN forum exacerbate the issue.< |

There are some MODs out there that do this. I use the Syndication MOD and the Simple Slash MOD (I think they're both on SnitzBitz) over at www.jesusjoshua2415.com and www.eastoverfd.com respectively. Both can be customized to your hearts content.< |

Ok, that is good to know. In your opinion, would using MySql help it perform better given the info you have supplied?< |

Yeah MySQL will perform better if you have multiple users on at the same time. I can't remember the numbers but if you are getting more and more active you will definantly want to make a change. SQL is stronger than MySQL if you are planning on have a ginormous forum. I can't remember but I believe this one is run on SQL but I could be wrong I just woke up 5 minutes ago. < |

Jeff, For a moment there I forgot you are in a different time zone. I was going to harass you about waking up this late in the AM,
campinmom03, of the two, I generally prefer MS SQL Server - but MySQL is a good option too. Both will give you better performance than Access. Access really wasn't meant to do this sort of work. It does it, and its sufficient on a case-by-case basis, but it really wasn't intended for something like this.< |

Its alright you can harass me anyways I over slept about 1 1/2 hours as it was and late for work But my oversleeping was only till 8am. I can't remember the last time I slept till 10 I think I was like 17 when that happend.
But I agree with Anon either one will work but SQL Server is from my understanding a better option but either one will work. < |
