Hi,

Here's the suggestion:

When you press the Active Topics link you get a list of topics that have been active since your last visit. This is good and all but it only takes me to the topic level. Instead of scaning through the topic after new posts, why don't add a link somewhere that takes you to the first post that's been posted since your last visist.

I know there is a blue arrow you can press to get to the last post, but I don't find that as useful. I wan't to go to the first post I haven't read.

It would be nice if someone could implement this. Doesn't sound to hard to do, I just don't know how.

it is very hard to do since the forum doesn't know whether you have read any of the topic at all let alone which replies you may have read.<

Then how does Active Topics work?

I won't argue to much with you, but the forum knows when I was last logged in, couldn't it just compare the times of new posts and my last loggin time? (or perhaps logout would be better)

The reason I mention this suggestion is that I've seen it on other forums, and just found it to be a very nice feature.

Active topics shows any posts made since you last visited, which is different than showing posts you have not read, SNitz does not track what you have read<

I don't get it. If it tracks post that are made, can't it just take me to the first post made in a topic after my last visit?

that is not what you asked for, you said "I know there is a blue arrow you can press to get to the last post, but I don't find that as useful. I wan't to go to the first post I haven't read." and the forum doesn't know what you have read. Having a jump to the first post posted since my last visit is just as pointless as a jump to the very last post if you have not read any of it.<

Actually Huw, with much respect to you I would like to disagree. Forum doesn't need to know which topics I am tracking, but of those that I do track (and read...) a link to the first new post since my last visit would be very useful indeed. Otherwise, active topics serves no useful purpose other than notify me of which topics have had activity, functionality that already exists with the purple folder icon in default.asp.

cheers...

Actually Nertz, disagree all you like, but first get your facts right. The purple folder on default.asp shows which forums have had posts, not which topics, so the functionality of active.asp is not duplicated by the purple folders in default.asp at all.<

Ok, sorry that I didn't formulate it right. In the forum I use, I read and keep track of everything so that's the reason for the formulation. In this situation, there are lots of topics, and I find myself scanning through old post again to see if I have read them. I therefore think this would be a really nice feature.

Yes, Huw, quite right... I did mean topic.asp is where the purple folder indicates recent activity to the topic since last visit. But I think Jerakeen's point was linking to the first new reply since last visit, a feature I'd agree would be very useful.

cheers,

I was just wondering, how does this work? Do I just wait and hope someone makes this add-on?

I have a little programming knowledge, how comprehensive do you think it would be for me to make this add-on?

I don't think it should be too hard, you'd just need to extend active topics to not only search for new topics (and without access to code I'm thinking active topics compares time of last visit to time of last posts?) you'd then search the posts and limit results to the top 1 being ordered by post time. That wouldn't do exactly what you're wanting as like Huw said Snitz doesn't track the topics you've read... it'd just be an extension to active topics. Maybe a mixture of the mod ajhvdb linked to and that?<
