Alright first option wins! I'll edit the code accordingly.

DJGray,

I've already added a few things to make that happen. Current version already supports that idea. All avatars set within the limit show up correctly as long as they don't exceed the limit. Otherwise some of the avatar may be hidden.

To show the avatar I used a table in the table cell instead of an image tag. This way I can show it as a background image and correctly show its deminsions (Spelling no doubt). Also in the table I use the image noavatar.gif to cover the background image so you can't right click the image and save it.

Also here is a preview of the avatars in action. Their sizes how you see it is how it looks on the forum as well.

well, little late to the party, but yeah, first option is better - having to go somewhere else to assign would just be an extra annoyance. i would, however, put the link to avatars.asp in the avatar area of the pop_profile, instead of with the other links in inc_header. it's really a profile option.

and, yes, delete the "request more categories" line. if it doesn't fit into any other category, then "Misc." it is. plus, that only would apply if you have upload to categories enabled. if it's disabled, the line doesn't mean anything.

also on that page, i would put the "upload to [category]" link closer to the avatars in the category. i think it gets lost up there in the right corner. the way i would want to see it would be

Blizzard Warcraft Misc.

Category Name

There are currently XX avatars to view in [category]
Upload to [category]

this way they can't miss it.<

Alright Signifigant Update

Avatars now function by option one voted on above. Basically the profile is no longer used in any other avatar function. The AVATAR_CATEGORY table is no longer used either. Everything is manually updated the current profile in the MEMBERS table.

I also removed the pop window associated with it. You just click the avatar you want and it updates everything. Throws you to a success screen then redirects you back to the avatars page with updated information.

Now I need some help with the redesign placement. I'm not feeling very artistic today. But this is what I have so far.

http://www.twistingshadows.com/userimages/AvatarMain.jpg

I think they all get the job done, I like option 1 and 3 [Going from top to bottom]

Which do you perfer? ALso if you think it would look better in a different design just let me know and I'll sketch out a sample.

EDIT: Just saw your post vynsane.

looks good. really good! i like the top one, or the second one. maybe take the right box from the second example and move it to the left side. i like the idea of having "your current avatar" on the left side, but it looked lonely without stuff underneath it.

the "click to assign" thing is huge. awesome.

as for the profile/no-profile thing, get rid of the selection box, and instead make it so you click on your current avatar or a link below it on pop_profile to get to avatars.asp. when you click to select an avatar, it gives you the "okay" message, and then kicks you back to either avatars.asp or pop_profile, whatever. you could use the same box from avatars.asp on pop_ profile with a couple of changes - "your current avatar is... [show pic]" then "click here to change your avatar" or "click the avatar to change it" (or both?)<

I kinda of disagree with this option. That means everytime someone wants to change their avatar they would need to log into their profile. I was trying to draw away from that.

Reason for it is because if I do add a link in the profile page then users will need to go past an additional page to get where they need to go. Not to meantion log in.

However I will create a pop profile with your idea to pass around and to get a working demo out. No worries! Still on schedule!

I will also create a few more different designs when I get in the mood to create something artistic. <

but this way, if you're logged in with cookies, anybody that is on your computer could change your avatar. not that that's a big deal, but going through the profile adds a step to security.<

I agree with Vynsane. Does it matter if it's one more step? Even if people changed their avatar once a day it wouldn't be a hassle, and most people keep their avatar for longer than that.<

Awe man I thought I sent that post before I restarted. Forgot what I typed...but it was similar to...

Where do I get the code so I can check if user has logged into his profile? This might be tough with all the other queries I've been using.

I checked the code for Pop_Profile and it seems I need the one for Case "Edit". Have any of you guys played aorund with it?<

right, except that nowadays many people (I think) store the login information on their navigators anyway (at least I do!), so this would not be much extra security<

well, to me, the security issue is second to the fact that an avatar is really a profile-type option, same as a signature line. that's the main reason i want to see the portal to avatars.asp in pop_profile, as opposed to the links at the top of the forum.<

Yep vynsane is absoluty right. I had to get out of the mindset that everyone doesn't click the avatar link as many times as I do. I maybe click it 20-30 times per day. I forgot was because I'm the one programming it. One of those things I'll get used to in the future.

I guess my biggest problem I can foresee is how can I determine if someone has logged into their profile on a different page? I haven't played with it yet, but I will tonight. If you have any suggestions post! Otherwise I'll post on another forum if I need help.<

when designing any web stuff i think about usability first and foremost. it's just the first thing on my mental checklist of stuff to accomplish. always try to think "if this were the first time i came to this site, where would i expect THIS to be?"

Alright vynsane, #1 is based on what you said. How does it look?

General Comment: If you want to see something else just let me know and I'll create a mock up. Mix and match any feature from any which one or suggest something fresh. Or if you want to create something yourself then that is great too.

Nope. Once you leave your profile you must log back in.<

I created a test forum. Check it out. It looks a bit disorganized but I have those examples up so you can see them. This is a test forum, you may not upload.

http://www.twistingshadows.com/dev/avatars.asp?method=Main&Select=Blizzard

The features on the new designs have been disabled. Just look for a design and let me know which one you like. I like the first one, I've been tweaking it here and there. Selecting an avatar is now instant without any pop ups. Go ahead and login and give it a test.

Active Features:
Instant avatar selection and update. Of course there is a success page as everything else.
Various avatar sizes so you can see they all still look clean and not distorted.
New look and feel.

Profile not yet updated. I'll do that tomorrow. I'd probably release it in the weekend. I see alot of code that needs to be cleaned.

Password: Tester

As always let me know all suggestions, complaints and issues. If you haven't noticed all new requests have a good chance to push the release date back a bit <

i like, i like... #1 is good. but i think i want the "current avatar" on the left, with the link to upload private avatar beneath it.

if i were to create my own, however, it would be all CSS'd out and not fit in with the tables format of everything else.

i was thinking about the wording, though. i think "private avatar" sounds like referring to private messages or something. i think a more appropriate monicker would be "personal avatar," (or like vBulletin "custom avatar") and as a counter-point, "public avatar" for those uploaded to a general category?<
