awesesome. i'll be implementing this on my testbed version of a 3.4.05 and report the results.
EDIT okay, so how can i get the avatars folder to have write permissions? i contacted my hosting to see if they would do it for me, but i wanted to know if there was an easy way to do it through ftp? when i right click and get properties through the XP built-in ftp, it says "this server does not support changing permissions" so i would assume i can't do it. but does that mean no one can?
other than that, everything seems to be working alright, but only after i REPLACED the
Dim StopWatch(19)
with
'Dim StopWatch(19)
-your readme says to place the commented out one AFTER the original. it should say "replace that with..." or just "comment that line out with the ' "
anyway, without the write permissions, is it normal for the "allow uploading" section of the admin panel to have both radio buttons selected? if i try to select the "yes" in that part, it selects the radio button next to "yes" but leaves the radio button selected next to "no" as well. when i click "save settings" it just goes back to "no". i don't have the same behavior with the create and delete folder options.< |

Yeah on Avatars.asp there are multiple includes for inc_header.asp, for some reason even though they both don't get called at anytime at the same time, they the variable still redefined.
Comment out the variable Dim Stopwatch on inc_header, I added it to the config file.
To change file permissions, I use my admin settings that most webmasters get when they get hosting. I doubt you can do it with FTP but I will go ahead and do some research for you. My best guess is to write an email to your hosting to get write permissions on that folder.

That sounds like a bug. I'll play with it and see what I can fix.
Zip updated with the correct instruction to replace rather then to add directly after.
I tested on two environments for the radio button. One with permissions and one without. They both worked fine. Post the code of the page when that happens. I wanna see the source when both get checked.
Try clearing cache as well.
As for FTP, you cannot modify permissions that way. All is controlled by drive directories. If anything, you can always create the folders yourself.
Go to the Admin Options create the new category, then add the category name you just created in the avatar folder.
And as a side note, did the original uploading feature work in Richard's avatar mod? This one uses the same thing.< |

yes, the original upload from admin worked, and i can create folders with your addon, so i guess i have write permissions already available...

i'm just going to double-post as opposed to double-edit...
you tested this with IE only, eh? it's letting me do it in IE, but not in FireFox, and i think it's because you don't have <form ></form > tags around the radio buttons. IE is far more forgiving than FF - to a fault...
here's an image of goofy stuff happening with the radios in FF...

I check the code and I see <form></form> tags in there. In avatar_data line 888.

This error would come from the value of intAvatarUpload to be neither 1 or 0. Once I get that error fixed in the Admin Config that should go away.
I just downloaded the root of all evil, Firefox. I'll test around in it.
Firefox is fine. Came up perfectly.
EDIT: Firefox is wierd. Sometimes the admin page updates and sometimes it doesn't. As far as the HTML, it seems right. What is Firefox doing that IE doesn't?
My HTML usually is compatible with Firefox, IE and Netscape 6.0+ without me referencing any guides.
EDIT #2: Try this. Use IE and set the "Automatically create
a new folder with
a new category?" to yes. Then open up firefox and go to the page. It should go on Yes. Then if you refresh again, it show go blank. It seems there is a counter I don't see yet with Firefox adding or increasing the value of the value on each refresh. I'll try to track it down.
Updated the Zip with a modified topic.asp. Changed the quotes to mimic the rest of the page.< |

did like you say, changed it in IE, and nope, the settings stayed the same with at least 8-10 refreshes in FF. even if i changed all radios to the opposite in FF, if i refreshed it went back to the settings i had from IE (still in FF...)
it has to be something with the first two buttons - it seems the first two bounce one check back and forth between them, always being stolen by the first button - i've seen instances of checks for both "yes" and "no" next to "allow uploading" and i've seen instances of checks for neither "yes" nor "no" next to "create folder" but not the other way around.
and FF isn't the root of all evil! it just makes you work harder for your results! < |

Currently a bug I cannot seem to fix. Here's the scenario:
When someone saves the value of this field to yes, Automatically create a new folder with a new category, then when they refresh the page, it moves off of yes to something blank. Dunno how or why but it only happens in Firefox.
The value "no" works fine. Nothing happens when you save the value to no. With testing the DB, even if you save settings when the value isn't not selected it still shows up in the DB as yes. I'll try to replicate the Type Mismatch error.< |

i actually had it happen where both "auto create" and "auto delete" were blank. the HTML looks good, though, so i'd venture a guess that it's somewhere in the scripting of the form action, and i'm afraid i can't help you there... not yet, anyway.
another thing that's weird... when i upload via "avatars.asp" the URL in the pop-up claims to be at http://www.twistingshadows.com/forum/ yadda yadda, and on my admin_review_avatar.asp page, it shows me two versions of each file i uploaded - one in the correct folder on my server, and a second "ghost" one that's just a redex with the full path to your website as shown above.< |

if i'm correct, uploading an avatar doesn't automatically assign the avatar as used by that member. also, it's available to anyone else for use. at other fora, when i upload an avatar, it's immediately assigned to me, and can only be used by me... (unless someone saves the picture through the forum and then uploads it as theirs...) also, i feel that the multiple upload opens the door to flooding both bandwidth and server space if people abuse the priveledge...
is it possible to make it so the user can only upload one avatar at a time (maybe it renames the filename after the user name or id?) and have it only available to that user (automatically assign "reserve for member" to the uploader...) AND (i know, i'm annoying...) automatically assign the custom avatar as used by the uploader.
i'm already playing with taking the link for "avatars.asp" out of the inc_header and just putting on the pop_profile page instead...
also, is it possible to add another option to the avatars.asp admin mode to restrict uploads by # of posts? like you can only upload after 100 posts or something?
i really appreciate all your hard work, and if you don't have the energy or time to make any more changes, i totally understand, but i think in terms of usability we could push it a little more...
i think about my account at another forum, where the avatar page looks like this...
if we had a single upload field on the page (not a pop-up) that did all that i said above (assign avatar for use, assign "reserve for member", and name image after user name/id) i think it would streamline the process greatly.< |

For an extension I already was thinking of a few things:
[1] I wanted to fix a few things I caught while sifting through the code. Minor that helps with speed and error checking.
[2] Private Avatars. A place where members can upload an avatar so they are the only ones who can use it.
[3] Few Extra Admin options like file extensions, images per row, extra moderation, file moving...
But please send your ideas my way, thats the beauty of having an active developer work on a project.
I will change the look of the page to look similar to the one above.

3 Rows of Avatars from current category - I need to learn how to make page numbers.
Uploading - Automatically assigns an avatar you upload

I think I will have this implemented.
Allow Private Upload - Enables / Disables Private Upload
Private Upload - Allows users to upload avatar for themselves only.
Dynamic | Allow Uploading to Category A, B, C, etc - Allows Admins to control if users can upload to particular category. This will help monitor standard images within a set category.
Disable uploading is already a feature.
I was thinking of implementing Usergroups into this Avatar Mod to help control who can and who cannot upload. Much easier to smaller forums. I don't know how it will effect forums that host as many members as this one. I need input.
Keep the ideas coming. Until write my game plan I won't start on this and it is a bad idea to submit ideas once its being written so chuck em now!
My end goal for this mod is to expand it further. Maybe a photo album or screenshot collection.
