hi, i know it's a strange idea, but at my forum
www.vynsane.com/forum
i have an area of the forum that i want to lock troublesome users in ("THE NEGATIVE ZONE") and i don't know exactly how to do that. is there a way to do that in the straight-up code of the forum or is there a mod to do this? i know about IPban, but i don't want to permanently ban them, and i want them to be able to access this one "penalty box" area only.
anyone?< |

As far as I know, there isn't a MOD available to do this. Although you might try the UserGroups MOD. Set something up to where everybody is automatically added to one "Generic" group when they register. Then, if they're bad, change their group to "Restricted" (or whatever you decide to call it). The "Generic" group has access to all forums (including or excluding, at your discretion, the "Negative Zone"), while the "Restricted" group only can access the "Negative Zone". After sufficient time or whatever has gone by, you can change their group back.
If you wanted to do this with a simple click of a button in some post, you'll need to do a little code rewriting, but I don't think it should be that hard. A simple check to figure out what group the user is a part of, then change it to the other group.< |

thanks, that might work great... can you specify whether users can view but not post in a restricted area? i kinda want "THE NEGATIVE ZONE" to be a penalty box where other users can "point and laugh" at the losers who are relegated to that area... not necessarily post there, but view the posts of the suspended member. is that possible with this mod?
also, is there a download of it anywhere? i can't find it on snitzbitz, i'll have a look around here, but if you're familiar with it's location, that would be a big help!
EDIT: nevermind. i found it. thanks a lot, i'll check this out and see if it's capable of what i need...< |

The MOD might be able to allow certain accesses to different user groups, but I honestly don't know. I've never tried it. Let us know how you get on and if it does what you need it to.< |

it seems like the features enable EXACTLY what i'm looking for... here's the link to the newest version, just to keep it in the forefront...
http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=48967
here are the features it touts:
* Forum administrators can assign members to UserGroups and the use the UserGroups to restrict access to "Allowed Member List" forums based on three permission settings: Deny, Read-Only, and Allow.
* Forums that are not an "Allowed Member List" forum can have Deny and Read-Only permissions for each UserGroup.
* UserGroup visibility by members and moderators is configurable by forum administrators.
* Individual UserGroups can be set as Hidden.
* Auto-Join UserGroups on member registration.
so i just create a group that has all the permissions the way i have it now, call that "normal" and then create a group that has the restricted access, and call that "restricted" - done and done. the "negative zone" can be read-only to normal users, but visible, and i can lock other users in there... now i just have to implement the mod! *ugh* < |

fully implemented now, and it's doing exactly what i want.
just a thought, though... couldn't this mod be extended to be a portal for a user to choose their own group? i post on a star wars board, where they have two different ranking systems: jedi and sith. you can choose which group to be a part of, and then you go through the ranks of that group. if we could extend this mod to add multiple rankings and user choice, it could do just that...
also, we could add automation to say, my situation so that a user switches back to regular user after a certain amount of days, or a starting out member would be part of a group that can only post replys until a certain amount of posts and then has full user ability...< |
