the speed seems fine to me, I don't think there is an issue with your server, maybe just your connection

You're right, it seems slow, and I'm on an ADSL line in the UK.
Who is your host?
Possibly it might be the calendar, you could move that to it's own page. You then insert it as a URL and change the URL icon to be a calendar. Easy.

no wonder you have like 50 different categories! From experience, i find that load time increases the more categories you have. There's more db calls and also it takes the browser a bit longer to render the whole table with all the categories.
You might want to re-structure you site so that there's less categories

Well there are some conflicting views
Is there a way to list the categories (not the sub categories) and then open them in a new page?
I have had the site on 2 servers, I don’t think that there is a problem with the host, im using www.innerhost.com this is the company used by www.aspin.com which im sure that your all aware is a very busy site.
Where I work we have a 1MB leased line and the site is still slower than I think that it should be.
Please have a look at this site http://208.222.229.62/ at the top left it has the categories listed and when you click on it, it opens up e.g. showCategory.asp?Cat_ID=3 does anyone know how to do this I think that this may solve my problem.
Thanks
