Both the buddy mod, the PM mod and other of the Messengerlike services available here at Snitz have one and only one fault! - they are not in REAL TIME.
My suggestion. lets build a Flash interface, that reads from the tables in the DB including forum colors and all - and then loops every 5 secs or so!...this would create the REAL TIME messenger service we all need, without any requirements of server or client installing anything or having page refresh frequently...possible?

hmmm. you are absolutely right!...for access DBīs that could slow things down...but maybe a new 2nd db for online features could be included? and DB that imported the fields from the original db?
Well... If you did another DB you would have to keep updating it as users registered.
I think the best thing to do is... Use a Messenger like Yahoo or something.
Now what you should try and figure out is.... Like on the Yahoo clubs they show who's online... If you could add that to your forum it would work out better because it would not load your forum down and it would go out to yahoo to get the information of who's online.
Yahoo seems to work the best and most people run it from what I've seen so far. I use all of the messengers. Only draw back to yahoo messenger is it will ONLY hold 100 people in your list where I have over 300 in my ICQ.

having an inppendant forum messaging system would benice, the ppl on my board would love this! it would be great if we could get a mod that works like msn, using some of the asp chat mods we have, and combining them with whos onlnie, and possibly the nuddy list, to create a pop up window which would contain fields for ppl on/off line and friends etc....i appreciate this type of tihng would be difficult to do...but it would be excellent...
