I have just installed the forum software on our intranet to replace a set of NNTP newsgroups. It all works fine, and it's a great bit of software. However, I have already been asked by a user about something which I don't think is supported, but sounds like a good idea.
The idea is that a user could choose certain forums of special interest, where they would get an email notification whenever a new topic is started, or perhaps could choose to get a notification whenever there are any new postings. The email notification would not include the body of the postings, but just the subject and URLs to link directly to the topic. Obviously they wouldn't choose this option for high-traffic forums.
The requirements for an intranet forum are different to an internet one. With an internet forum, the target audience is huge and only a tiny percentage of available users will use the forum. With intranet forums, the opposite is true. The number of available users is small and finite, but it is very important that take-up among the available users is very high. Otherwise, information is still moved around using other channels, traffic is low, confidence is lost and the forums become ineffective. I believe this idea goes some way towards addressing this, because it allows people to effectively use the forums whenever they need to, rather than be expected to visit every day to see if anything has changed. That just doesn't happen unfortunately.
I don't think I will have time to do this in the short term. So I just wondered what everyone else thought about the idea.

Great!
That will save me a bit of time then
I am amazed at just how good this software is, and it makes me wonder why anyone would buy one of the commercial alternatives.

I'm working on an Intranet forum to replace all the unnecesary emails that go out to all our employees. I've been thinking about different forum topics and have several listed. Could you list some of the forums you'll be using to give me more ideas?
