I have just installed a forum, on a hosted site, using MySQL and it worked fine for a couple of days.

When I came to access the forum the next day I got the following error:

HTTP 501 - Not implemented

Can anyone offer some advice?

Could you disable the "friendly errormessages" in Internet Explorer so you can see what the exact errormessage is ?
Did you check the database still is online ?

I am therefore assuming that there is a problem with my host.

My host has restarted the ASP server and I can now reach the forum but when I try to logon it brings up the confirmation page but I am not logged on.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Try unchecking the "save password" checkbox.
Could you post a url to the site so we can check to see if it is a thing specific to your pc (= check if we can logon)?

Unchecking "save password" made no difference.

I registered, got logged on, logged out and logged on again without a problem using IE 5.0
Do you have cookies enabled ?

I deleted the cookie that was on my PC and I was able to log on ok.
