Hi guys, I hate to post this, but it really is driving me insane. My forum has been working for some time now, and I have been working on it for months to slowly bring it up to speed of just how I like it. Now here is the weird 'cannot login scenario'. ANYONE that I try now, regardless of which account I try (admin, myself, test1, test2, etc) I cannot login. Now keep in mind that this has been working for months, and now suddenly stopped. I can see all the profiles, and if I go to change one, it accepts the exact same username and password and I can change the profile and save it no problem.

I tried changing the password, saving the profile and trying again to no avail. I tried restoring from backups and exactly the same thing. I tried using the default database again, and same thing. The default u/n Admin and p/w admin will not work on the default database. So then I restore my old database back, and try the admin_login.asp, and I can get in. Again I try saving a new password, and it takes it fine, but I cannot login from the top right hand corner. I tried updating to the latest one available (3.1 SR4 if I am not mistaken) to no avail.

Now I notice something else that I am sure is tied in with this issue. I thought that maybe I could restart things, so I logged in under admin_login.asp and then clicked on check installation, and it gives me

The database could not be opened !!
Check your config.asp file and set the
strConnString so it points to the database.
Also check if strDBType is set to the right databasetype.

Sorry to be so longwinded, just trying to be accurate. I did read this forums support, and I notice a lot of ie5.5 issues which is what I am on now too. I am wondering if this started when I upgraded to ie5.5. I also cleared the cookies and set their levels according to the posts to no avail. I also tried changing the 'Set Cookie to' option from forum to website as per the help file by clicking on the question mark, but I get the same error listed above, and it will not change it.

I also tried to change the connection string, which I am sure it set properly. I have tried both straight and virtual pathing. I have also tried moving the db to another folder as was suggested in another post.

Thanks in advance everyone, I am sure it is something simple, heh.

Ok something new, but I still have NO idea what is going on. I removed my original forum, after backing up of course. I downloaded the latest version, and set it up in another folder. It is the default settings, and the dfault db unzipped from tools.zip. Nothing else has changed. I set things up, and I can see the forum, but cannot login STILL! Everything else is the same, I can see that there is only one user (Admin) and I can see and modify my own profile, no errors otherwise except I cannot LOGIN! This is driving my nuts, so any help would be appreciated. I would love to stay with Snitz.

Can you post a URL to your forum so we can look at it? Also can you leave the Admin password as admin so we can test logging in.

Sure thing.

It is http://siliconjesters.com/forum
It can also be reached at http://siliconjesters.dhs.org/forum

U/n and p/w are set to Admin and admin (defaults). I just downloaded the latest version and put it in a bare dir to try and get around the problem.

Thanks a lot =)

Sorry, I had deleted all the aliases for the website to see if that was the issue. You can try any of the following :

http://www.siliconjesters.com/forum
http://siliconjesters.com/forum
http://siliconjesters.dhs.org/forum

The site is on my own home machine with Win2k AS on IIS 5.0. This really has me perplexed because it WAS working for months, and now suddenly bonked out like this. Even with that, I cannot believe that I can't set one up in a new folder and get that going, but I get the EXACT same problem...starting to think that it might lie outside of 'forum configuration'. Look forward to what you guys think.

that is strange, I registered, but it just won't log me on. Could it be that you disabled session variables ?
Also, running setup returns a "The database could not be opened !!" error even though the database clearly must be there because my userinfo got stored correctly...

Another thing is that I can post, if I enter my username and password in the post page it accepts them without a problem.

That is EXACTLY the strange behaviour I was talking about. It was NOT like this until a few days ago, and I am unclear as to what has changed that is so devastating.

>that is strange, I registered, but it just won't log me on. Could it be that you >disabled session variables ?

How would I have done that? More importantly how can I change it back?
Some other things I have thought about :
1. I did update my anti virus software definitions. Although I think that this would not have anything to do with this, I am getting desperate and mentioning anything that I can.

2. I use windows update fairly regularly....is there a security patch that I auto downloaded that might be the source to this?

Thanks a lot for the help guys.....I don't feel so bad now knowing that the pros are on it. ;)

Just to answer a possible question, there is NO firewall software or hardware right now.
What is the default database setup? I unchecked dbtype = access and then I have tried all 3 : Access 97, Access 2000+Virtual Dir and Access 2000, and I get the same results. What SHOULD it be?

I'm having a similar problem only with one user. I've had her check cookies enabled and just about everything else I can think of. She's tried two different browsers and both will not allow her log in. ??? I'm at a loss. This just starteed for her yesterday.

Here is how I solved it :

1. Made a backup of the forum, specifically I zipped all the contents of the folder into a zip archive.
2. Delete folder in question ONCE YOU HAVE A BACKUP! (It's your data, you were warned)
3. Go into IIS, remove folder or any virtual dir linked to it.
4. Restart IIS (just find this helps). Reboot.
5. Go back, make a new folder to house your folder, unzip all the contents into it.
6. Go back into IIS, and either add that folder, or preferrably make a virtual dir to it.
7. Make sure that in your forum you have already addressed config.asp (set to Access, or SQL, what have you).
8. Restart IIS once again. Login and you are ok.

My only guess is that somehow either the date/time stamp or the permissions on the folder somehow got corrupted or changed accidentally.

Thanks again!

Well....since you contributed most to this thread (being the original topic poster and responsible for 10 replies) I think we should thank you for not giving up and for posting how you fixed it. That is one thing people sometimes forget, but that is something that could help others with the same problem !

Thank you

Nice forums btw, you might want to post them in the "Show Off Your Forums" forum.
One note up ahead: I've got a bit problems reading the blue text (the colour you use for the menu and the forumtitles)
