Just recently, NT authentication completely stopped working properly on our network. We have a mixed client environment, some running Windows 95, some running 98, and a handful running 2000 Professional. Does NT challenge/response care what client is trying to access the web resource or does the client have to be running NT or 2000 to gain access to the secured folder without typing in the network username and password?
The thing that is confusing me right now is that some can gain access to the folder by typing in the username and password, but others get an HTTP 401 error, and can't even get a prompt for the username and password. Of course, with 2000, I get right in without any problems.
Now, about a week and a half ago, I tested this with a few Windows 98 machines and they got right in without any login prompts. Now, some get the prompts and some get the 401 error.
Could something have FUBAR'ed the domain controller and user permissions?
