I've been informed my forums are not working correctly and have been playing up since early afternoon...

When going to view any topic the following error is displayed...

•ERROR!
•XML File - Failed to validate.
•System error: -2147012894.
•Error code: -2147012894
•Line: 0
•Character: 0
•Source: ""
•20/01/2016 21:38:03

No changes have been made to any files, tech support are looking into it as I type, the servers (x2) have both been rebooted, but the error still shows

Can anyone shed any light as to what the error relates to and also advise on a solution

Regards

First two possibilities that come to mind:

1) They are using Symantec Backup and Windows API reports an error with a device driver. If that's the problem, updating SCSI/USB drivers would probably fix it.

2) Adobe Flash: If you have a swf file which is being loaded, updates to Flash may no longer support it. If that's the problem, you can either remove the swf file from the configuration or convert it.

To help resolve it, look in your root directory for "config.xml" | "boot.config" | or any other .xml document which may be there; then post a copy in .txt format.

Hmm, I've passed that on to our hosts but now anything using a database connection to this domain (maggotdrowning.com) isn't working however another domain on the same server using a MySQL database on the db server is working fine (both servers are dedicated)
Also I can't get access via ftp to maggotdrowning.com but can to the other domain

The only file I have in the root with any reference to xml is one called: web.config which has been there a long time

Contents o which are:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<configuration>
    <system.webServer>
        <httpErrors errorMode="Detailed" />
    </system.webServer>
</configuration>

It appears to be specifically related to your topic.asp file, my gues is it is some of your javascript stuff possibly relating to the ads etc that is causing the issue on topic.asp.
Other than that page your forum is working fine, there does not appear to be any issue with it talking to the database.

Hi Huw, have you just accessed the website as I cannot get it to load anything but html pages at the moment?
Anything database driven isn't working

I've renamed the adserver directory to prevent that functioning for the time being to rule that out

yep still looks ok for me, although still get the same error on topic.asp, however it can't be data/db related since if you click the reply to topic link, it happily displays the topic and replies below the post form

I didn't notice that - thanks

I might have got down to the bottom of the problem as for some reason the domain name is coming up as expired on a whois search, but my domain registrar is adamant that it is not and was renewed last year until 2017.
They're looking into that now at there end; whether or not this and the forum issue is related I don't know, it might just be coincidence ?

There's some strange happenings

Hi Huw, I've uploaded a back up of the topic.asp file and it now seems to be working

No changes had been made with the existing file that I know of but I'll compare the two later today as work has been beckoning all morning

Thanks

I've compared the original topic.asp to the one fresh out of the box (so to speak) and there are that many changes I've made to it over time it's hard to compare.
The 'fresh' one works for the time being so I'll leave it running until the early hours when the site is quieter and then try swapping them back over to see what happens.
It just seems strange that the error occurred for no apparent reason, and yet coincidently the domain itself was showing as expired on Whois when apparently it wasn't.

The nameservers were also changed to ns1.domainexpired.com and ns2.domainexpired.com but not in my server's control panel.

This caused another issue for me as my ISP updated their DNS and the site was no longer available on my PC although it was on my phone using a different ISP.

The domain name issue has now been resolved by the domain name registrar, no explanation as to why it happened to 'expire' though.

Oh for an easy life at times

You may want to double-check for any sign of any malicious intrusion into your website.

Thanks Doug, I did that and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary

Earlier this morning I changed the topic.asp file back over and all has run fine as before, no issues, which leaves me to believe that the problem was to do with the domain name being marked as expired and the nameservers being changed also.

How that had an impact when the rest of the site and other database driven software seemed to work ok I've no idea. unless Snitz used up more resources on the database server as a result when bringing data requests to populate the threads - way over my head though
It might have been coincidental but then again.....
