I want to share something I'm wanting to do in hopes someone can help me understand how to accomplish it.

  • I would like to have a few of my sub-forums "hidden" from all members.

  • I want to have "user groups" created for theses hidden forums I'm referring to here and have them set up so that all members can view the list of these groups and allow "auto-join" for them, too (obviously meaning membership doesn't have to be approved).

  • But in the end, only members who choose to join the groups can view these hidden sub-forums.

One of my motives here is to prevent members who choose not to participate on those sub-forums from even having to see the sub-forums. But also, this lets me know exactly which members, and how many, are interested in these sub-forums since some only like to read and choose not to post. But with it set up like this if they want to see what's going on and see what's being posted, they could simply join the user group. It will also allow the members to know who all is interested.

Now if all of the above is possible, will the members who join one of the user groups mentioned above be automatically able to view and participate on the hidden sub-forum associated with that particular user group immediately when they join the user group. . .or would I have to manually add them as a member of the hidden sub-forum after they join the user group associated with that particular sub-forum?

I probably went around the block to get next door with my explanation here. . .so I'm sorry for being so wordy!

I think I've found a solution for this. Well, the forums and/or sub-forums won't be hidden but they will be inaccessible to members unless they want to join.

Anyway, this is what I did. I created a group and allowed self-joining. I love, LOVE this feature! I also set the permissions for the "associated sub-forum" to "allow." For the sub-forum that would be associated with the group. . .I selected the authorization type as "allowed member list." Just below the forum name I placed a link to "click here to join this group" for members who might be interested. When the link is clicked, members are taken to the area in which they can simply click on a "join group" button to join the group and they then have immediate access to the associated sub-forum.

So, all members will be able to see that the associated sub-forum exists but they can not view or participate in anything on the sub-forum until/unless they join the "group." Did I say that I LOVE the "allow self-joining" feature of the "User Group" mod?! I'll just have to place a "click here to join this group" link for each forum of this type because otherwise members won't be able to view anything posted or join the group.

Just thought I'd share this in case anyone was interested.

A huge THANK YOU to Carefree for making this possible with his incredible "User Group" mod with the "Allowed Auto-Joining/Quitting" feature!

I just now revised my "click here to join the group" link.

With Carefree's incredible "Allowed Auto-Joining" feature for the "User Groups," each group has a number. So, for example, when a member clicks to "join" the very first group I created. . .the end of the link where the member is taken, to join the group, ends with "groupjoin.asp?IG=1." So, below the title of that first group I placed the "IG=1" in the link so the member only has to click on that link and nothing else to join the group. In the link for the members to join the second group I created I placed "IG=2," the third group "IG=3," etc.

I love being able to make things easy for the members!
