1) I need to shut down a Forum. Once this is done is it safe from being hacked?

2) While the Forum is shut down can the admin still go in to copy out material from the various posts?

1) Whilst logged in as Admin go to http:// yoursite name / forum / down.asp to shut it down

2) Not as far as I know unless you lock the category and it will still be visible but people can't post.
You could change the individual forum properties to make them Hidden until you'd completed your tasks
