since a few years i'm running snitz forum on an old pentium 4 personal computer running windows xp and abyss webserver. now this 'server' starts showing its age and i consider migrating to a new box.
desired config : windows 7 64bit in a virtual machine (vmware esxi 5.1) running abyss webserver as well.
i'm aware that i have to re-license active html as well.
does anyone of you know if this config will run as stable as my old xp environment ?
Hard to say as I'm not all that familiar with abyss' server software.
I am curious though why you're focused on using the consumer version of windows instead of a proper server-grade OS. The small business versions of Windows Server are fairly cheap and come with IIS - no extra licensing needed.
Either way, it would help others recommend if we also knew which database technology you were using.
i run abyss/snitz on windows xp for years. never had any issues with this setup. longest uptime between reboots was more than two years. so what would be the advantage of a server os ?
btw, i started with unix in 1987, linux in 1999. so i DO have some experience with server os. but for the ease of use i decided to use windows.
The main advantage in this case would be that it comes with a web server package you wouldn't need to license separately.
Mostly the question came out of curiosity - Windows has optimised the client and server versions for their purposes much like Linux clients and servers are optimised for their respective roles. I've not seen too many success stories arise from using any client OS for server purposes unless the scale was small (usually dev work and not a public production service). I'm wondering if your case is more to do with using Abyss (a proper server software package) than anything on the OS level. But that's neither here nor there.
Some people have had problems with the Jet drivers in 64-bit environments, and the solution for IIS is around here (don't recall off the top of my head) and I'm not sure the admin functions you would need to find are available in the client version of Windows - or maybe Abyss opens up that option and/or manages that on its own. Off the cuff that's the most immediate issue I can foresee running into.
