Pretty basic stuff but I'm not a programmer and must rely on the technical expertise of others and am at my wits end.
Any thoughts on why a forum experiences constant time outs and page loading delays? Click on a forum link (never mind which one) and it often just grinds away "waiting for forum..." sometimes it falls into a black hole until one manually stops loading the requested page or it may time out with an SQL Server error message (90 sec timeout setting according to the host).
Of course, on the surface, the logical answer is it's a server problem. But in what regard? My host says I have no bandwidth limitation and no restriction on simultaneous users. My forum averages over 28 posts/hr 24/7 with a LOT of photos, etc....some 3-4 million server requests/mo. What else could it be? What the heck level of server capacity does a fella need for a very active forum? My host is beginning to suggest it's the forum itself that's now standing in the way. Is there anything that would even suggest that it cannot keep up with a high demand?
I've noticed that the same "waiting for forum..." thing happens on this forum though certainly not of the same degree as on my forum. It's a daily (if not hourly) occurrence on http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.com/default.asp (snitz 3.4.07)
Edit: FYI, I just got a timeout on this Snitz forum trying to access a member's profile!
Anyway, thanks for letting me vent my frustration and if you have any thoughts I'd surely appreciate it.
Also, pardon me if I should have posted this in the SQ Server forum. |

Is it just you or are your members complaining? I ask because you mention that you're seeing a timeout on this site looking at a member's profile.
The next question would be are you the only site on the server or are you on some sort of "shared hosting" where someone else's app is sucking up resources?
It would also help to know the specs of the server and if (assuming based on part of your question) your SQL server is on the same box as your web server or if its on a different one. And what the specs are on that box if its separate, and if you're sharing it with other apps/people.
And that's the start of this fun little troubleshooting voyage... |

Your site is lightning fast for me. I am in Phoenix AZ and use Cox Cable basic (slowest) internet plan. Have you tried accessing your site from somewhere else? I could just be your PC/Net connection.
Regardless, go into forum admin options and run Update Forum Counts. And if possible, close the site for a bit and run SQL's "Compact and Repair" function on the DB.
I don't know how that works on SQL, I use Access, but it has a tool option for doing it. In short it cleans everything up, re-index's, and compacts the DB to run faster.
