hello, i am running an active (for MS access, anyway) forum (from 5,000 to 15,000 total visitors per day) at ConcealedCarryForum.com. everything is running well, but my DB is so bloated that the only way to overpower the limitations of access is through a dedicated server with modern hardware (windows 2000 server with amd dual core 6000+ processor on 4 gigs of ram).
in an effort to trim up my database my intent was to delete everything in the archives older than one month. i attempted to do this, but the process timed out and i got an error. when i went back to try again, it says that it cannot find any files in any archive anywhere in the forum.
we currently show a total of roughly 45,000 posts, yet the database is over 310 megs in size!
i want to wipe all of my archives from the database and trim it up a bit, but no archives show up anymore. any advice would be appreciated.
also, is there a way to flush old posts without having to archive them first? thanks, |

hello, mysql would be ideal, but this isnt an immediate solution as both require me to learn sql systems. i have tinkered a little with mysql but have little success in making it play nice with a windows based server. i intend to stick to windows based servers. if you can direct me to an "ms sql for dummies" (or something similar) i would like to eventually upgrade.
sticking with an access db for now, what can i do to clean up my db? thanks, |

I sent you a couple of e-mails through your profile. Did you get them? |

you would probably be best to install SQL 2005 express, and unless you plan on writing your own queeries you don't really need to learn anything other than how to install it. |
