I am a 'forum want to be'. I am just trying to understand my options. I am wondering what kind of load an Access Forum can handle. I an Oracle developer and aquainted with Access. I am leaning towards trying to start up with MySQL not access. I do like the simplicity of Access for a start up but reguard it as a real 'light weight'.

Why did you feel compelled to switch?

I see MySQL can run on a Microsoft platform. MySQL looks like it was designed to run on Unix. What do you do for the LAPM? Is that interface needed?

Can I assume you did not have to make any major changes to the forum other than switching the backend?

What MySQL will give you over access is a higher number of simultaneous users and better performance overall (depending on the load of your database server, of course).

MySQL runs perfectly on a Windows server, no need at all for the LAPM, you will do fine with Windows Server, IIS, ASP and MySQL.

With MySQL you can take advantage of some optmized code for searching and archiving, which I typical problems if you use Access. I also enjoy the ease to do things like remote access and backup.

The only thing you need to do to your forum code will be two changes in config.asp. Other than that, all will work fine.

Usually people upgrade to MySQL because of performance issues, either related to the number of simultaneous users on their forums, or big sized Access DBs.
