The speed of posting has been terrible, so I took some time to transition the database from Access to MSSQL, thinking that would speed things up.

The speed jumped to a fraction of a second for new topics and replies, but is now back up at 16 seconds for no discernible reason.

I've made the changes to post.asp suggested on these forums, and even replaced my post.asp with the new version in 3.4.06, but it's still at 16 seconds.

Any ideas? Even replies of one word take 16 seconds to add to the database. This is on a dedicated server, and I have complete control over it, so any suggestions would be welcome.<

Do you have subscriptions enabled?

If true it could be taking some time to send out all the emails.<

Make sure that file indexing is turned off.

If it's on a Windows based server,
  1. Go to start/run, type "services.msc" (no quotation marks) and hit enter.

  2. Scroll down to "Indexing Service", disable it, and stop it.

  3. If you have installed "Nero Burning ROM", it also installs an indexing program. Scroll down to "NMIndexingService", disable it, and stop it.

Probably the migration tool you used didn't create the indexes a Snitz table requires, as the Access DB has very few, if any. So, it always goes down to the way you migrated your table. A SQL Server DB without indexes will perform just as bad or even worse than Access.<

ruirib, was there some script to re-make all snitz indexes for sql rather than "upgrading" method?

Yes, it does appear to be mail related. When subscriptions are disabled, the forum flies.

The server indexes and constraints are good.

Hrm. I'll have to think about that one. Speed vs. subs.<

When I lowered the level from Forum to Topic it made a huge difference.... Your mileage may vary. <

The community isn't huge, but it is very active, so there's a lot of mail activity.

While the issue was mail related, it turns out I hadn't reset the mail server address. I still had it pointing at the old host. When I switched it to my new mail server, and turned subscriptions back on, everything flew.

That probably explains a rash of new "reverse IP" mail server errors I had been getting for the last day and a half as well.

This is my first time with complete control over the host machine, as we just moved from a shared environment. I'm just loving the speed boost and everything just feels more robust. Snitz feels new again.

I gotta give it to the community here. If they don't solve my problem, they are always offering suggestions about where to look for one, and most times that's exactly what I need =)<
