My bulletin board has been working great - it's the .05 version [but that's a different question, below!]

I just had my hosting service change the permissions to log in at the 'members only' section of my clients' site, so that just current members can access the forum. All members use the same general login before they get to the bb and can login or register on their own for postings, etc.

We can get to the bb with the new login just fine, but when someone tries to login personally or newly register, it's giving the following error message...
Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005'

Operation must use an updateable query.

/Password/FEWAsnitz/inc_func_common.asp, line 576

I've tried to find a place in the setup or configs where I had to assign the previous members' login, so that I can change it to make it all work, but can't find that place [and don't have a note in my installation notes that I ever had to do so before].

As first troubleshooting step, I logged into the bb with the 'old' member login and everything works jsut fine. So it seems it has to be a second 'permissions' step somewhere?

Can anyone offer a way to help?

[different question - I have not upgraded to the newer .06 version because I find the 'upgrade' instructions in the readme file to be pretty sparse -- I'm a coding moron so would appreciate more detailed step-by-step directions. I was able to get the whole thing set up originally when I installed the .05 version, but I'm hesitant to make the changes fosr fear of losing posts, etc. Yes, a coding moron, as I said! Can anyone offer the details??

Thanks!!<

If you search for "Operation must use an updateable query" you'll see that its a server permissions issue. There's a sticky topic floating around here on just that.

As for the upgrade, if you have not added any MODs all you need to do is:
  1. Make a backup copy of everything. Good backups are the foundation for a more sane admin.
  2. copy or write down your database config information, and any other pertinent changes you'd made to config.asp - A good file comparison tool like WinMerge or BeyondCompare is good for helping with something like that
  3. copy the new files over your old ones - EXCEPT for the Access database - use your old one (again this is assuming you didn't make any modifications to the forum outside of the changes to config.asp)
  4. add your database config information back to the new config.asp
  5. upload and go to setup.asp
  6. enjoy the goodness.

Even though its not packaged for general release, you may want to jump right up to the pending 3.4.07 - due out whenever Davio finishes up a few little odds and ends. You can download it here: [link]<
