I was considering the exact same thing, an email to users when a new message is posted. On my home site, I have two installations: a public one for the local Symphony Orchestra group (my Wife plays cello) and a private one for family use. Neither forum has more than about 20 users and not much traffic either (it's only been up for about month).
My installation is hosted on SQL Server, so I was thinking I could create a maintenance job that parses any new entries in the message table and if it sees anything new, looks up email addresses in the members table and fires off a SQLMail message to those members. An alternative would be to put a trigger on the message table that immediately sends off an email message to all users whenever a message is posted (easier to implement but definitely not as nice).
Access doesn't support triggers or scheduled tasks. An alternative would be to use an OS level scheduler that would once or twice a day load the Access mdb file and fire a macro that looks up new messages and sends email to the members email address.
I'll see what I can do, if anyone is interested, I'll post my findings here...
