I'm trying to get my dads router working for him while i'm home for a week and I've hit one immediate snag... he didn't know what he'd originally set as username and password so i hit the reset button and held it in order to reset to factory settings - the network then did show as its default name but for some reason denies access for the default uname & pwd (blank username and 'admin') - google can't seem to give me an answer, wondered if any of you guys had any ideas? if it makes any difference i can only try it from vista at the moment... but i don't think that should cause that... think & should lol
be very grateful for any suggestions :)
edit, its a linksys 'WRT54G' btw |

Have you tried using the disk that came with it? Theoretically it shouldn't make a difference, and in the past I've always set them up without the disk, but it doesn't hurt to try the simple stuff first. |

did you try admin/admin ? it is unusual to have a blank username as default
Vista may be a problem, in IE try enabling SSL 2.0 (it is disabled by default under Vista as it is insecure) |

done all to no avail :( and i've tried just about every default username and password combination i can think of - the readme clearly states no username and password as admin though... |

after resetting the router using the reset button, have you tried unplugging it and then plugging it back in? |

Are you connected to it? Can you ping/telnet it? |

yep connection to it is fine - all pings in ~ a millisecond so there's nothing wrong there.
Ooook, i just managed to get a program from the manufacturer which displays the settings even though I can't edit them - the username is blank and the password is admin... however I still can't login with them... this is weird lol
Final edit, i'm now nearly 100% convinced this isn't the router but some setting in Vista, I've checked over all the settings in IE7 and any other network related settings I can find but given that the router itself shows the correct info I'm just gonna wait til I can try it off Vista and see what happens, thanks for helping guys |

Not had the opportunity to yet, dads left his laptop at work. i was going to wait for kubuntu 8.04 before sorting this laptop out with it but... i'm really not liking vista lol
Oh this is bugging me now, just tried it on another computer, wired up only - which despite setup and my laptop recognising it as reset (note this comp has never been connected to it before) it recognises it under its old name... not only that i can no longer even ping the router - I just get timeouts or destination unreachable on both wired and wireless - despite the setup cd being able to reach it etc |

Might want to try the factory reset procedure again... sounds like something might not have reset properly. |
