I've seen a handful of sites that incorporate part of the url in a script in the page. For example, I have google site search here...

http://www.coincommunity.com/numismatic_search/

Now what if I wanted a user to be able to type in

http://www.coincommunity.com/numismatic_search/widget

and have it return a search for "widget" on the page instead of showing a 404 page. I've seen sites that do this nicely with for example ebay searches, they snag the word and incorporate it into an rss feed url that they then display on the page.

I would imagine a setting on the server would need to be tweaked for this? Right?

With a custom 404 page you can achieve a lot ; not all, but a lot.
For instance at oxle.com you can visit a members profile page by simply using this format:
http://oxle.com/username.id ; example: http://oxle.com/marcelg.id and http://oxle.com/yosh.id

that's not strictly what a 404 page is for, you should really be using some form of URL rewriter to accomplish that.

Huw, I fully agree that that's not what the 404 is for, but you cán achieve a lot.
