It's a Dutch word (more accurately, the Anglicised spelling of the Dutch word "Schnitz") that roughly translates as "dried apple slices" but that's got nothing to do with the etymology of the name of these forums which is detailed in the link above.

Strange....I've never heard any dutchman say the word Snitz, except for Friesian people who refer to the city of Sneek with Snitz.

Hmm, could've sworn I said German ... weird ...

It's an old word, though, you won't find it in every day use.

Ah-hahaha! Just Googled up the page I got that translation from a few years ago - turns out it's the glossary page of an Amish recipe book!

The word "schnitzen" in German means "to carve".

I'd like to know how you all pronounce it. I don't have very many occassions to say the word out loud but I imagine its pronounced "Schnitz".

Podge.

Same here. No "sch" sound, just plain "snits".

I think the phonetic fact that you say what you see makes it a strong name for the internet - you don't need to spell it out every time you say it!

Anyone pronounce the "i" differently or do you all use a short i?

e.g.

"eye" as in "sn-eye-tz"
"ee" as in "sneeeeeetz"

Podge.
