Microsoft just announced what has been rumored forever: a formal offer for Yahoo. Microsoft's proposal to Yahoo's board of directors represents $31 per share (a 62% premium over yesterday's closing price) or about $44.6 Billion.

They just have too much money to squander.

I think its a good thing. Nothing wrong with competition for Google.

Yeah, but it's a huge price.

I hope this will make yahoo better. The only reason I don't use yahoo now is it just seems way to busy I like how google is simpler.

Only £20bn in English!

I've never really liked Yahoo!. Even in the good old days, I preferred Altavista, Infoseek, Excite and Hotbot to it. Wow, I bet there's some people reading this who've never even heard of those. Anyone remember Northern Light?

Sorry, going off track a bit here...

I remember that Altavista launched Raging.com shortly after they realised Google had taken all their traffic. All the search engines back then were bloated. Compare Altavista then and now

Yeah, 2000 was about the time they ruined it. Just compare that to just the year before:

Apart from Google, they still are! Okay, most of us don't have to deal with dial-up anymore but does every search engine have to be a portal?

edit: fixed link. Forgot that Snitz doesn't like archive.org links

Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle

Yep, they were early, but I can't say I've used them for a search in the best part of a decade, as their idea to list sites in a directory was soon abused by idiots (before they started spidering sites). I agree, altavista.digital.com stole the lead from them quite quickly, but then Google came along and did it better!

If Yahoo and Live searches combine efforts, there's every chance they could beat Google, which is what MS clearly want more than anything! MS are still #1 on the OS front, Google #1 online, and they can see the increased competition from Google and online services as connection speed becomes less of an issue, and want a slice of that!

Yahoo says that they may NOT take the offer, remember they've rejected it once already! :)

They will eventually accept it, they just want "more money" that's all. I don't think there is any "pride" issue for a company that announced firing thousands of workers.

REJECTED AGAIN! But, they say if Microsoft wants it that bad, they will be willing to pay more!
