quote: Sun Microsystems will plunk down $1 billion to buy MySQL, the maker of a popular open-source database.
Sun said Wednesday that it will pay about $800 million in cash for MySQL's privately held stock and will assume about $200 million worth of options. MySQL CEO Marten Mickos will join Sun's senior executive team after the transaction closes.
The acquisition is a bold move for Sun, which has embraced open-source software and development practices in an effort to garner more revenue from its software business. Until now, it has sold support services for a competing open-source database, PostgreSQL.

Wow! MySQL is a really successful company. Still trying to see why the CEO decided to sell out instead of going public like he said he would. From the looks of it, doesn't seem like Sun is going to mess up MySQL so maybe this is all good for MySQL? hmmm |

Getting bought out may open up more doors than it closes. There are probably a lot of places out there like where I work where they won't touch anything that doesn't have a big name (MS, IBM, Sun, etc.) behind it. They've actively resisted using MySQL because it wasn't a big enough company. Maybe now we can look at using it for some of the smaller in-house apps. |

I read that second article this morning. I'm really not sure what to think about the whole thing at this point. Part of me wonders if the end user is really going to be impacted all that much. I know that this means there are new avenues opened up for MySQL, but I seriously doubt Sun would risk damaging their and MySQL's reputations by making drastic changes to it.
Definitely something potentially exciting to keep my eye on. We use MySQL pretty extensively at the university where I work, so this could impact us quite a bit down the road. |
