Problem having system (forum) send emails to posters who has subscribed to a forum. On my forum posters seem to only be able to subscribe at board level although I've tried to set the max level to topic--no subscription icon. Even at board level the forum does not send an email to me when I start a new topic. Any help?

You won't receive notification of your own topics. Have you enabled forum subscriptions at category and forum level on the main page of your forum ?

This feature is not intuitively implemented. The only place to set the feature is in Admin Forum Features where you set the level--board-topic. When I set board I see the icon, when I set topic I don't. I can't test the feature since it doesn't respond to my posts. The FAQ imply that mod/admin can set on/off at every level--where!! The FAQ describe what the feature does but not the details of setting and testing which is what I want.

Register another account and post with that, you should then receive notifications at your main account's email address.

This is the tutorial

I just saw the tutorial and made the changes. But without the tutorial, this would have been impossible to figure out.

Thanks Podge, I know sys admin is a thankless job. Okay, it's working. But one more question: what about "topic" level subscription? I don't see an icon anywhere, and board works on topics when subscribed and Catagory and Forum are enabled, as per tutorial.

If a member is already subscribed to a forum, category or board then topic level subscriptions are not offered to the member. There's no point in receiving two notification emails for the same thing.

If a member is not otherwise subscribed to a topic they should be offered a check box to subscribe to a topic when either posting, editing or replying to a topic (except quick reply).

I must have missed this "check box" on my forum--this is not an intuitive feature for me. Then I looked to subscribe to "this" topic to get an email when you responded (Podge), but apparently you haven't turned the "subscription" feature on!

You won't see it if you are already subscribed to the board, a category above the topic or a forum above the topic.

This is an example of a topic only subscription - http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aV8cEGA

Subscribing to your forum via rss is also an option if you are finding email subscriptions too difficult. If you have an RSS reader then subscribe to this url - http://forum.snitz.com/forum/rssfeed.asp

MarcelG has a rather nifty (and easy) mod here - http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=56247

I'm not saying this to be an ass, only as something helpful. After running the forum for a couple of years now and being on other forums, I think that subscription is the single most valuable feature to make a board lively. The way it's implemented here is less than optimal. In many other forums you are "subscribed" to a topic you talk in. That's the default. It keeps everyone coming back automatically. If you don't want emails, you can click a box in your profile. The way this is implemented is too complicated and most people will not even understand what the subscription icon is for.

Its not ethical to subscribe a member to a topic without their knowledge. Subscription should be opt in rather than opt out. Its not all that complicated for the forum member to use. Once a forum admin understands how subscription works, its easy to setup. Besides, you only have to set it up once.
