I've added images to the forum descriptions and am unable to make the images clickable without them opening a new window. As best I can figure, this is a function of how image tags are handled by the code in inc_func_common.(?)

Is there a way to not have what are essentially in-post image links open in a new window?

No, this is how urls' are handled in the forumcode.
....let me think about this for a while....I know this can be fixed.
