I am currently running a forum with email-validated registration required. It has been mentioned that some visitors would like to view our forum without having to reveal their email address by registering. A suggestion has been made to allow unregistered "guests" to have READ-ONLY access, with only registered members being able to post to the forum.

I would appreciate any input on the pros and cons of doing this, pertaining to the privacy of members (email addresses), and spammers. I need convincing that this suggestion has merit, or ammo to shoot it down.

Secondly, if I were to go along with this suggestion, how would I go about doing so...change settings, a Mod, or other workaround?

Thanks for any input.

That's actually the way the forum works straight out of the box. As far as I know, most forums have that option set. As for the pros and cons, you'll probably find people who will argue on both sides of the line. However, spammers won't be able to send email through the forum unless they've registered and logged in. Guests are not able to do anything other than view posts available to the general public (i.e. anything that's not in a hidden or members only forum).

To set the forum up this way, just go to the admin section, under Main Forum Configuration, and set Require Registration to "Off". That will allow guests to view your forum without registering. Everything else will still require them to create an account.

Thanks for your help. I'll give it a try for a while and see if we run into any problems.
