Hi, Thanks again for helping me last time in getting rid of that guy that hacked in and gave himself admin privliges. He's still gone and I'm more careful now about who gets approved for membership...
I'm using v3.4.06 I have recently discovered another problem (used to work okay). When I go into "Admin options" and click on "Archive Forum Topic" I get a progress meter that completes and disappears, but I never see the next window where I select which forum I want to archive. Any suggestions? |

Hi, I didn't know there was going to be a quiz, lol. This forum has been operating pretty much flawlessly for me since 2002. I don't remember anything about the original configuration. I think the database is MS access. The file extension is .mdb How can I confirm? |

It's Access then. Unfortunately, that being the case, I don't think there is much you can do about it. For SQL Server or MySQL you could use different archiving code, but with Access you can use stored procs to archive. |

Hi, Thank you very much for your assistance. What leads you to believe it's the DB that's the problem. When I click on this link, I'm expecting another Snitz page that doesn't ever appear. Why doesn't that page appear and then fail when I choose which forum to archive? It's very hard for me to believe I'm just stuck and there's "nothing much I can do about it". That's completely unacceptable. I can't keep operating the way it is now. I've been happy with Snitz software for 5 years. Why can't I replace the DB or something? This makes no sense to me...
Do you know ANY way I can get past this problem? |

The problem is that its timing out due to the number of items you are trying to archive. With Access, your options are unfortunately limited.
You could try reducing the amount of topics you are archiving at any given shot, and archive in small chunks until you get to where you want to be.
You could upgrade to a better database system - either MS SQL Server or MySQL - which will open up some new options and you'll get a good overall performance boost too (assuming you properly upgrade). |

Hi, Thanks for your assistance. I don't mean to dispute what you're telling me, I just want to understand correctly.
Here are the symptoms again... I'm not actually getting to select any items to archive. From the options menu, I click on "Achive Forum Topic." I used to get another window here that opened and gave me the opportunity to select which forum(s) to archive (or not). It's no longer going to that page. I'm not receiving any error messages or other indicators. When I click the link I get a progress meter (like I get when I change pages) for 5 seconds so. When the progress meter disappears, I'm still in the admin options menu and no other windows have opened. It seems to my inexperienced logic like an .asp problem or something. I would expect to find a db problem possibly after a selection on that "next" screen that doesn't appear anymore.
1. Does this still sound like a db issue? 2. Are there instructions available for switching to a MS SQL db? 3. Am I going to be able to convert my Access db to MS SQL, or are we going to be starting over?
Thanks again... |

Hi, I just looked and that link seems to go to admin_forums.asp The file size of that file is 0kb. Does that sound right? |

Just for future reference,
2. Yes, there are some very detailed instructions for moving up to SQL Server.
3. No, you will not have to start over. You will want to make a backup just in case (that actually applies any time you do any extra work to/with the database). |

Hmmm... it seems your problem may not be a performance problem, which may mean I didn't understand correctly what was happening. Upload admin_forums.asp again and see if the problem is solved.
