Not a bad version 1. (please don't take that the wrong way - lets just say I'm glad some of my early designs aren't to be found on the web any more. )
I like how the colors are consistent across the entire site. I would, however move your navigation links to the top in the rest of the site, and make them just a little more consistent... maybe develop a site-wide header using an include and then add that to the forum using the Site Integration MOD - this way there is even more of a consistent look throughout your site.
I made some changes to my site. I try to never take constructive criticisms personally. Not sure how to do some of the thing you said. I only dabble in web design I am after all just a bowyer

Did some redesigning of my forum and added an integration mod. Please check it out. Also if anyone has a good way to boost membership I could use some pointers.
