In which case, according to Panhandler, I run the risk of losing my forum topics and posts. . . . .
It is just as easy to protect your Access database by making a copy of it. Keep two copies, one on your computer and one in a seperate folder on your server. If you make a mistake and over-write your working datatbase, you can simply load the back up.

This image MOD is driving me nuts! Based on what Panhandler stated earlier this morning regarding Proeders MOD and Access DB which I have, I aborted proeders in preference for Mike's MOD Are you now saying that I could install proeders (preferred) if I can copy the access db? I can't see a DB directory on the server, only the normal snitz files so where is it to copy? I've spent the best part of the day clearing my forum files, uploading mike's attachment which is still not working because I do not know how to read/write the permissions to the 'uploaded' dir. Now you're both suggesting I could first reload the integration mod, then reload proeders. Oh heck! But where is the access DB? And will I have a similar read/write permissions question later with proeders? |

In config.asp you will find a line just under the strDBType area that will give a clue to the location of the database.
You will need the permissions set the same way, but unless you are installing the 5 in 1 mod, you do not "need" to install the integration mod for proeder's to work. But you will have to install the fixes detailed in the post modifichicci linked above.
Either way you decide, you will find help here. If you want to go forward with Mike's I am sure it can be adapted to what you want (displaying images in posts). I just don't have any experience with that version, so I don't know how much work that would be. |

Found the Db are you speak of Located the address at "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=D:\websites\localuser\*username*\private\*database*"
But how to set permissions? Contacted my hosts about permissions and they replied "When we set up the sites we give the whole account write / modify permissions by default so you don't have to make any changes. Your account includes a 'private' folder which cannot be viewed directly from the web and should be used to store your Access database(s)."
Apparently therefore I've got permissions but I don't appear to be able to modify them. On that basis can I go ahead with reinstalling proeders?

You should now be able to back up your database which I would suggest you do everytime you make a change that will touch it like adding a mod will. By saving a copy to your local machine. Usually done via FTP. I also suggest you back up all of your forum files in the same way. That way when/if you mess anything up, you can easily go back by uploading the local copy.
Before you go further I would clarify the permissions with the host. Your upload folder will require anonymous users to have write/modify permissions. You do not want anonymous users having these permissions to you whole account or account directory, just the upload directory. If you can not change the permissions yourself, you will have to setup the directory structure and request the host change the permissions for you. |

I have a duplicate of my forum on my PC via FTP. But I do not understand how I can obtain a backup of a DB I can't access via my FTP. Meanwhile I will contact my host regarding the other point you raised. |

This means that the anonymous web account does not have access to the private folder, but your account should. When you log in via ftp you should have access to this directory. If not, request that your host provide a "virtual directory pointer" to the private directory. |

muddywellies, When you uploaded the Snitz files via ftp - you probably uploaded the standard Snitz database that comes with the files. Look for: snitz_forums_2000.mdb
Its right there in the folder with all the other Snitz files. Download it to your computer and put it in a safe place. Then make a copy of it, and put it where you can work on it. You will want to rename it from snitz_forums_2000.mdb to something more secretive like buxussemperiverns.mdb (or whatever). That's the database!
You'll want to download the config.asp file and change the name from snitz_forums_2000.mdb to buxussemperiveerns.mdb (or whatever).
Then upload those two files and you'll have your secret name database and the config.asp file pointing to it.

Also I have been warned by multiple people to create a folder just for the database within the forum for added protection if you are using the access.mdb database file. So from others recommendations to me when I first started out would be create a random folder. then put the database file in there with a random name letters and numbers lower case and Capitals.
ie: http ://www. somesite.com/forum/databasefile/FyFt65Ty.mbd
This would probably be the best practice for something like that. Hopefully that helps |

Sorry but no snitz.mdb visible via my FTP files. snitz_forums_2000.mdb is located on the host in a private folder but I have no access to it at present. Tomorrow morning I will follow PPSSWeb's suggestion and contact my host support so I can obtain access to the private directory.
Meanwhile, will take your cue 'Panhandler' to change name once the MOD's working - noticed the Box plant.
Good point JJ. So i create a databasefile folder and put it on the forum, then extract and rename the snitz_forums_2000.mdb and put that in the databasefile folder. But will my host allow that if it's been privately tucked away in my private folder mentioned previously?
I have now downloaded Proeder Mod 1.2 and printed the instructions and I'm about to start on that. |

I highly recommend that when the system goes live the database be located in the private folder that the anonymous web account does not have access to. Having a copy in your web root makes it much more vulnerable unless it is in a subdirectory with limited permissions.
Of course, for setup and testing purposes this is not as much of a concern. |

I'm making the necessary changes for proeders MOD on my PC files at present. I have previously removed the code of previous mod setups by working back through files so I am as certain as I can be that my forum is 'clean'. But, in the admin options section of my forum under MOD SETUP inside the blue box 'Database setup' there's a drop down menu which says "Site Integration MOD v1.0" which I don't know how to remove.
Is this harmless for the proeder attachment? Also. What is the consequence of the bottom line mean under the dropdown menu - "Delete the dbs file when finished?" |

This is the dbs file that is used to make the necessary database changes for that MOD. It's presence in this list means only that the .dbs file is still present in your forums directory. You can manually delete the file to remove it from the list.quote: Is this harmless for the proeder attachment?
The existence of this file will not help nor harm the attachment mod. It will only add some minor clutter to your forum directory and take up a bit of disk space.quote: What is the consequence of the bottom line mean under the dropdown menu - "Delete the dbs file when finished?"
If you select this option the .dbs file that is selected and run from this screen will be deleted for you forums files directory upon completion. |

So if I tick the box and delete there's no harm done and some clutter is removed. Confirm |

If you tick the box and select update (the only option on this page), it will execute the contents of the dbs file then perform the deletion. depending on the contents of the file there may be no harm done. If you would like to remove this entry without executing the contents of the file, simply delete the .dbs via FTP. |
