For some reason my Snitz forums that I have run for over 5 years now have been in the past 4-5 months been flooded with spam bots?... the bots is trying to register under none exsitant domain e-mail addys leaving me with snitz and my website mail host sending me crap like this 30-50 times a day:
quote: This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
Unable to deliver message to the following recipients, due to being unable to connect successfully to the destination mail server.
akrud@akyn.com
What do I do to stop this? It's driving me nuts, and I have allways loved Snitz, but I am about to change to PHP boards... HELP!!! |

you could try helping yourself by using the search, ther are several solutions that will help. This is not a snitz problem, and changing to a PHP forum is unlikely to help since the bots in question actually target more php forums than they do snitz. |

Everybody seems to have seen a spike in this sort of stuff.... I think Guardian wrote an appropriate song about it: "Its a mad world" ...
Shaggy wrote a small addition to require the Birthday (most bots don't enter that yet), there's numerous other topics outlining step-by-step numerous other ways - and its all just a search away. |

In fact, making any other field required will stop the bots. Just did that with a state field for another forum and it stopped the bots. |

What you've written is what we call a MOD, so one of the MOD forums will be the best place for it to my mind :-) |

You can add it to the growing options in the MOD Add-On Forum (W/Code) forum and/or you can add it to www.snitzbitz.com
I think its worth mentioning that these CAPTCHA-type MODs are nice, but do not conform to usability standards... and that is a requirement for some sites. Its also worth noting that they are not foolproof. There are numerous sites that deal with this, and you can get a good primer on some of the ins and outs over at Wikipedia. |
