I am just a moderator on our forum, so I don't have any ability to fix anything, however, that being said...
I noticed that a PM I sent to another member was in my outbox, in bold, indicating that it had not yet been read by the recipient. Later, it was totally gone.
I did a test with another member and we discovered that when she deleted the PM I sent her, it was also deleted from my outbox.
Is this some sort of bug? I like to hang on to my outgoing PMs at least for a little while, but if the recipient deletes the message and mine gets deleted too, I have no control!
Whaddyathink?
Thanks!

No, its not a bug. This has been discussed a few times before... the short answer is that there is only one copy of the message stored in the DB, so if either party deletes the message - its gone.
For a more in-depth discussion, search around. There's been at least a half-dozen threads on it that I remember seeing in the last year or so. There's probably more in the Archives. |

That is the way it is intended to work; the only way to permanently hang on to a PM you've sent is to grab an offline copy of it.
(Well, it's not the only way but, as you're only a moderator with no access to the code or database, you can't make any changes there)

Search is your friend “I was having a mildly paranoid day, mostly due to the fact that the mad priest lady from over the river had taken to nailing weasels to my front door again.” |

Well that's not the answer I was hoping for! If that's the way it was "intended to work" I think it's kinda dumb. Seriously.
Sorry that this issue had been discussed previously -- I searched before posting the question, but I guess I didn't use the right search query.
Thanks all for the explanation!

Take it up with the site owner, its something that can be changed with some programming. The original intent was to keep the DB size at a minimum - very important if your host doesn't give you much space.

Its ok - that happens. It may have been that the topics are older than I'm thinking they are (or I've been here longer than I'm thinking I have been) - and they could be in the archive. If you check the "Search Archives" checkbox on the search page it will search there instead. |
