I recently change my forum directory name from "forum" to "group" and moved all the files over to it. Everything seems to be working with the happy result of no more phony registration attempts. Fake Members pending = 0
But now I'm wondering if anything else may have been lost. The "Search" function seems to work Okay. And I'm assuming that any links containing the "forum" directory won't work.
Would there be anything else that could be "broken"?

The only problems you'll have is that any bookmarks or links (including those from search engines) that point to files within the forum directory will now return 404s and any cookies your members have on their machines will no longer be valid if you have cookies set to website. Note, also, that it won't be long before the spambots crawl your site again and find the links to your new forum directory.

Yup, you might want to create a /forum/default.asp page with one image on it saying 'moved to /group/ instead - please retype your link' or something - that way it's only person-readable and may buy you an extra few weeks before the bots catch you again ;-) |

Okay. . .thanks. It sounds like we can live with that. Our home page is still #2 on Google. . .so no change there.
The old forum has re-direct page with a four second delay that requests users to reset their links.
Regarding being found by the bots - I've had one forum up for over a year now with not one fake registration. Its set up as a sub-forum with a structure that looks like this: http://www.ourgroup.examplepage.us/ourforum/default.asp |

A user reports this:
quote: This is probably related to what you just posted, but I'm trying to edit one of my pre-conversion posts made a couple of months back and I get this error:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d'
Type mismatch: 'rs'
/campfire/post.asp, line 657
"Pre-conversion" meaning before changing the forum directory name. Funny thing though - I can go back pre-conversion and edit my posts without any problem. Any ideas?

Search the bug forums; that has been asked and answered many, many times.
