Currently, the simple slash mod allows you to display topics within a forum. Is there a way to configure it to instead show replies within a topic?

I know its been done, I just don't know if the code changes have been posted....

Garyrobar wrote a mod that you can customize to do this I believe you might want to do a search for displaying topics outside forums. But I believe you can customize it to do what you want.
