I posted about this once before but the response I got didn't resolve the problem.
We have a forum on our website, enneagram.net, and get more posts for viagra and nokia ads than from actual members. How do we set the configurations so that only members we approve can post?
Both the email validation and restrict registration configurations are set to on, but we still have spammers posting! Is there a way to require moderator approval of new members before they can post? Any other suggestions to keep the spam at bay?
in the admin options there's a option to restrict registration which in turn will have you approve each new member individually. I guess you can filter out the bad ones from there and reject their registrations that way or try one of the spam add on's
Also you can turn on moderation for the forum themselves that way before any post is made it has to be approved by the moderator or the admin. I believe this feature does this I have never used this.

From the initial post, it sounds like you've already done this... but it bears mentioning that if you didn't lock the accounts that already got through they will still be able to post. Also, if you activate all accounts without checking them out, you run a good risk of activating a spammer's account.
There are several mods out there to help stop the spammers from registering in the first place. This seems to be an increasing problem (I've noticed a BIG jump in attempts, and there are a ton of recent topics on the subject).
It also helps to get the MOD (can't remember the name to save my life) over at www.snitzbitz.com that lets you look at a pending member's profile. It will help you in your decision to activate or delete the pending member. (though I usually recommend activating and locking if its a spammer)
Spend some quality time with the search page and you'll find tons of reading on opinions/suggestions from a very large population of people who would like to tell those spammers where they can stick their Viagra.
