Hi folks,
A user of our has a 171MB access DB for their forums and we're seeing memory issues. From what I've read here, it looks like switching to MS SQL is probably a good thing for them. Just curious if the experts would agree?
thanks, mikeS |

The memory issues may not be due to the database. A database upgrade will likely benefit performance anyway, but that may as well be achieved through other means, such as compacting the current DB.
Anyway, database size is not the major factor when deciding to upgrade. Number of simultaneous users and forum performance are more important. |

And selective archiving may help your performance a bit.
Memory is cheap though - if the question really is RAM, $100 will get you plenty, far cheaper/easier (although less elegant, granted) than $100 of SQL Server license/$100 of your time.
Try the things mentioned above first (archive, compact/repair) and see if it's still a problem. If you've got a big concurrent userbase and so losing performance it may be worthwhile upgrading though, and I am personally a huge fan of MS SQL Server :) (If you have a lot of concurrent sessions and an old box/limited RAM, you'll be seeing 35k/session memory used, so the $100 of RAM suggestion is a real possibility!)
