What is the difference between private forums and private forums with list? I tried to setup a private forum without list, and any member can post.

What I really want is a private forum where members can ask the moderator to join. Anyone can read the forum. Is this possible?

what do you mean you created a private forum without list ? what exactly did you do? what auth type did you choose for the forum.

Obviously if it is a private forum then anybody can't read it, that is kind of the point of it being private

There are two types of private forums. I can get the one that reads allowed member list to work by not the one that says members only. What am I missing?

From your 2 posts, it doesn't seem that you're missing anything; both aoptions sound like they're working as they should for you.

My forum has a private test forum. If you are logged in and it is private, any one can read or post. If it is private list, only members can see and post.

I left it unhidden. It is part of a test forum. The url is http://copd-forum.portalone.us The forum url is http://copd-forum.portalone.us/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=9. You can use the login demo/demo or create your own.

if you are logged in then you are a member, so by definition you can post and read a private members only forum, that is what member means. if it is an allowed list forum then you must be added manually to the list to be able to post and read in that forum, so they are both working how they should, if you are not logged in then you can't read any type of private forum member or list.
