UPDATE 10-14-06
I'm very proud to announce Release Candidate 2 of the Eternal Second Snitz forums. The new version includes:
- A reworked forumcode parsing system - hopefully, this will help alleviate many (if not all) the problems with using validated code in forum posts.
- Active Users MOD
- Avatar MOD
- Google Sitemaps MOD w/Admin Panel
- Dynamic image and avatar resizing using Persits software's ASPJpeg component for ASP.
With this version, upgrading things should only get easier. As I incorporate more and more mods into the "base" ES Snitz, I'll come out with update zip files, including DBS files, to keep in line with what we've got going here.
So, without further ado, here is the link to the ZIP file. If you downloaded RC1, you can overwrite your existing forum files (with the obvious exception of the DB) and simply run the DBS file.

Feel free to register. If you don't want to, test/test will get you in to play around.
I think this belongs here more than anyplace else. I'm nearly finished working on a validated version of the Snitz software. I'm starting with the base code and making the whole thing valid XHTML and CSS, as well as taking a lot of the style elements out of the files themselves and sectioning them off in a separate CSS file.
I'm quite happy with the results so far, and so I'm posting here to see if I can get some people to play around with it.
Here is the link to the forum. If you don't want to create an account, test/test will work fine.
Why a validated version? Well, my business partner and I try to make every page we create validate according to W3C standards. We love Snitz (used it for several years now), but it didn't validate at all. We tried a few other forums that were valid "out of the box", but didn't like the support, features, and ease of customization that Snitz has. So, with that in mind, we just decided to make Snitz do what we need.
The end result is that the new version of the forum will use valid code (even for the Forum Code in posts... though this may still be slightly buggy, please test it) for the whole thing. As time goes by, we'll add some MODs to the forum to make it our own and help set our version of the forum apart, especially since we'd like to see people downloading and using our version.
If you want to take a look at the code, there is a link in the announcements forum on our site to download the Zip file. Most of the files are in there, but I still have to work on a couple files in the base Snitz as well as the files in tools.zip. |

| Nice one!!! How will you be doing the CSS styles ? By means of an adminpage where you define the styles, or by means of a static CSS file? |

Basically, I'll be sticking with the admin section nearly 100% intact as it is with a base Snitz. I've written a few scripts to take the content produced by the forum variables and whatnot and turn them into valid CSS file for the forum to pull from.

I don't mind at all! The entire reason I posted here was to get feedback and help finding the things I've missed. It looks like most of the things you posted haven't been worked on yet... I'll be doing pop_*.asp pages and (hopefully) the post/post_info.asp pages tomorrow. However, I hadn't noticed the default.asp category issue, so thanks a bunch for briging that one up. The quick reply is also something I'll be fixing tomorrow after work. |

Made several changes and additions. I'm getting really close to being finished with the conversion of the entire base code, so if anyone wants to download and test it, or just come on over and post, that would be awesome.

Once I get the base code done, I'll leave it be for a little while to allow for some time to test and get bugs worked out. Then I plan to add in some of the more popular mods, like Active Users, Polls, Avatars, and PM. From there, we'll see what happens. |

| Ok. The base code is finished. At this point, I'd love to have some testers try to break what I've done. Feel free to download it (same link as above post) or sign up at our site. I don't expect it to be bug free by any means, but it should be pretty close to finished. |

Good work, I thought I'd have a look around..
You've hard coded your site address in the CSS and XHTML checker, can you use STRFORUMURL in inc_footer.asp instead?
Also none of the buttons or the Smilies when click on work when I try to post a topic or edit a reply. Not even the Preview only the Post button works!!

Thanks for pointing out the hardcoded URLs. I've converted those into Request.ServerVariables blocks. As for the buttons not working, I can't get them to not work. I tried on a new topic, edited topic, new reply, and edited repl in both Firefox and IE. What browser/os are you using? I dunno if I can duplicate the error.

I've tried both FF and IE too! Strange, I'll do a complete wipe then reload your latest and test again.
I registered on your site and all the buttons work as expected, I wonder if this is a server issue...

why would you want to do that ? Snitz was never intended to be and has never even pretended to be XHTML it is standard HTML and should thus be validated against that. |

Yeah. I agree that Snitz has never been intended to be XHTML valid. However, I believed it was possible, so my partner and I (mostly me, but he helps with the code too) decided to take this on.
The < and > encoding should be taken care of by tomorrow. No time to work on it right now, but hopefully all will be working with that soon.

My comment was not aimed at your efforts, but rather at Mark for even attempting to validate it as XHTML when it isn't
