Not sure if I should post here or on the general help forum but whichever I post on I always seem to get the wrong one so they get moved anyway so I'll try here first (and then wait for my 'moved' email )

I've set most of the individual forums on my site to Members Only, and a few to Allowed Member Hidden, so all the titles of the Members Only forums are visible from the main page so people know what the site is all about, but to get in to read or post anything, visitors must register and be logged in. The Active Users panel is visible only to registered members.

Since I added the Active Users mod, I've been checking the Active Users page just to have a nosey at what people are looking at, and I've noticed today that there was a guest that appeared to be looking at a fairly old topic. That topic wasn't visible from the first page of my forum, so to view it they *must* have got access to the specific forum where that topic was... Question is, how did that happen if that guest wasn't logged in and didn't have access to any of the forums because of not being logged in?

I've tried doing a search when I wasn't logged in to see if that's how they managed it, but when I do this, no search results ever come up so that rules that out.

I've seen previously that guests have been looking at a specific forum (as opposed to topic), but I've assumed that it's just when they've happened to have clicked on the forum as I was looking at the Active Users page and thought they must just get the usual 'You must be logged in to view this' message. Now I'm not so sure whether guests (non-logged in visitors) can read topics or not - what's happened today makes me think they could well do...

Can anyone shed any light on this? Are there certain logged-in members that may have things on their computers to stop their usernames being picked up so they can read and post stuff but show up as a guest and not a username?

I can't show you what I mean on the site because you'd have to sit there and wait for it to be recreated if another of these mystery guests appeared...

Ooh, and the Allow Anonymous Members thingie is switched off..

Sorry this got long, but hope someone can help

Charly

Non members or non logged in members cannot read topics if the forums are setup to avoid that. If they try, they get the message stating that they can't access the forum, but Active Users does not now that. The code in Active Users that checks the visited page does it before the code determines whether the member can access the forum / topic or not.

This means that you have no reason to suspect the forum access restriction is not applied. It's just the way the mod works...
